The 'First referendum' 40 odd years ago was about joining the Common Market, the last one was a choice between
staying in it, or leaving it.
I've not heard anything about another one, other than the hopes and aspirations of the losers of the last one.

The first one was about staying in or leaving the common market. We were already in it.

The second one was about whether to stat in or leave the EU which was a consequence of the Common Market.

If there have been 2 previously to get out of the Common Market/EU why not a 3rd to either ratify the 2nd or to determine if we want to rejoin?

Yes, I get your point, Heath took us in it, and at the time it was seen as good and benign and we voted for it,
so yes, I concede the two were (more or less) the same thing.
As to yet another, I very much doubt it, but am willing to bet, if there was,
the vote to leave would be higher.

The House of Lords rejected such a proposal in March by 336 to 131.
There is no reason why we can't have a rejoin ref. in a few years time. It would be interesting how you would explain that giving up sovereignty, control of borders, our laws and taking the euro will benefit us.

The issue for me is not so much what each side would be promoting - it is more the fundamental one of the role of referenda in our (unwritten) constitution. This equally applies to , for instance, Scottish independence. At what point do we say "No more referenda on this issue for X years"? Well the answer is we can't unless we create legislation to do so. So all that happens is the arguments continue ad infinitum.

General Election are divisive but the populace know they can change their minds in no more than 5 years time if they so wish.. Referenda engender their own unique divisiveness which is not so easily remedied.

Thereby lies the problem for anyone hoping for yet another. It can't now be sold as a trading bloc, with accompanying
benefits, all the nasty unpalatable stuff is now in the open, in 1975 I don't recall anyone voting against sovereignty loss,
borders, laws and the euro, because back then those things were not an issue, now they are.

Got to agree here the electorate was mightily deceived during the run up, If only we'd have known the devastating effect of the Emergency budget, the 3 million thrown out of work the end of Western politics, the recession that immediately followed the vote, the collapse of public services as no one will ever migrate here again, the massive tax rises but the worse of all the row after row of little white crosses from the outbreak of the 3rd World War. fancy the remain camp knowing the future so accurately eh.

We never gave up sovereignty.
We have always had control of our borders.
We still make laws in the interests of the people of this country.
No one is forcing us to adopt the Euro - but would it be such a bad thing?
