Asda Pay at Pump

They are effectively blocking £100 in your account. I always pay at the kiosk now to avoid this. I put £20 in a few months ago at Morrisons in Openshaw to get me to the next pay day, leaving me about £100 in my account to survive on. They blocked this £100 (noted as 'pending' on my account) and it remained that way for around 7 working days, leaving me with nothing to live on during that time. I spoke to Morrisons and my bank about it, both saying there is nothing they can do about it. I despise the modern world and all its pathetic ways to make life more difficult than it already is.

Yes

Apparently what was happening was that a bank account only needed the pre authorisation amount to allow you to get fuel (usually up to £99) and this used to be £1.

Couple of days later the payment declines as they only had the quid in the bank and not the amount to cover the cost of the fuel taken.
Sorry I was taking the piss. The post was about scousers having to pay first. As we know scousers don't pay.

You should brick the modern world's windows and torch the gaff.

I never ever use a debit card for electronic transactions, only a credit card.
Then if there’s a problem it’s them trying to get money out of me rather than me trying to get money back off them.

They do this in areas where they can't trust people. In parts of Liverpool you have to pay first and then put in the amount.
In the days when you were polite and moved the car from the pump to let someone else start filling, I was at a station in Salford
I filled up, got in and moved the car five yards.
Just as I stopped and put the hand brake on, a bloke threw himself on the bonnet thinking I was driving off
I got out laughing and he said "sorry"

The odd place where there's 24 hour petrol stations over here, (mainly in Dublin and Cork; none out in the sticks around here), you have to go the window and pay up first if you call during the night. Then go and fill up,the pump will knock off when you reach the amount you paid up.

they hold £99 on your card while you put in whatever amount say £20 then the hold is canceled and they take there £20,so tonight i put £16 in around 5pm and just checked my account and they have taken £99, what do i do? go to the bank or ASDA or will my acount update at some point
£16....wouldn't get you off the forecourt. £99 is about 3/4 of tank, do the decent thing and remember the person who's next to fill up will see what a cheapskate you are, take a picture and social media will ruin your life. Just saying....

It’ll likely be a pre authorisation rather than a debit.

I’m with Starling and these authorisations are labelled differently to completed transactions. They disappear after a day or two.

Your banking app may show them differently I guess.

I never use pay at pump for these reasons, can’t be arsed with it.
Soon..you will have no choice .

Surely this must be illegal? Not overcharging, although they have obviously robbed you, but the very practice of doing this.
Must be.

They’ll hold it in their accounts long enough to acquire interest on it and then will give it back to people having made money off it.

There is a petrol station in Eccles that does this. You go in tell them how much you want to put in, pay and off you go put the petrol in and it cuts off as soon as it gets to the amount.

They have had a lot of drive offs, it’s an independent one and it’s prices are sometimes cheaper than the big guys.

You must drive a big car as most petrol tanks are 45-55 litres for mid sized vehicles. So that’s £81 - £99 at £1.80/ltr.
