Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post-Match Thread

Oh yes well done, facetious reaponse of the weeks goes to a nothing exchange.

Incidentally. The team that made the change yesterday chased and got the winbibg goal. Just happened to have been unfairly ruled out. Just my perception. And the fact it actually happened.
You can see the point he's making, though, right? Arsenal just lost their game for making offensive subs chasing a game. So it does pose the question of how many teams win, lose or draw after a set of subs that chase the game.

Rather depends on the quality of the subs, doesn't it? We've got subs that would literally walk into virtually every other first team in the league. In fact, we've just offloaded two ‘subs’ who are just about the best thing about their respective teams, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Well I'd imagine it is dependent on a lot of things, including who you take off and the flow of the game and how long the players take to get up to speed and if you have a more important game on Tuesday and the fitness of the squad and so on and so on. But I don't think the original poster was making a silly point to say that though it might feel like a truism chucking on attacking players might not actually always be the winning move it feels like.

Poor performance in the end I don’t get why he didn’t bring Alvarez on when we needed a goal.
Pep wanted to show Gundie and Bernie that they remain important to him. Therefore giving them as much game time as possible. Not sure why he gives an out of form Phil so much time still. Harland must play. Rodri in his holding position too. This leaves only KDB's place where Alvarez could have started. Mahrez coming on rather than Alvarez was a pecking order decision. Pep is trying to be fair and dare I say kind to those who have served him well. Of course Alvarez should have come on yesterday. The whole forum has said so. Grealish too with instructions to take defenders on! I hope Pep will eventually realize that Alvarez should be the second name on the team sheet (after Harland) because he's that good. South American's Player of the Year must have looked on in disbelief at the performances of those preferred to him.

Not every subs will be always game changer and besides i think Pep feels that equalizer changes the momentum to Aston Villa heavily. So he against making too much tactical changes in fear it will distrupt the team and only ended up making us lose the match.

That would be my reading as well. I do get the frustration of being a fan and wanting to chuck the exciting young kid on who looks like has bags of energy, but I trust Pep in these moments.

Walker should not be played in midfield. It isnt working as he's not good enough on the ball. That's not his skillset. If Pep wanted a rightback who can go into midfield we should have bought one or play Cancello there.

Also Foden has settled into being a system player.

Gets the ball and immediately passes backwards. No creativity, vision or drive to his play anymore.

I suppose it means less chance of losing the ball which is what Pep wants.
I still believe in Phil but you are right. "Gets the ball and immediately passes backwards" and often to whoever passed to him! But now Harland is here, he does pause and play a forward pass! Yay. I recall an England game where Phil played some brilliant long ball passes (forward) rather like KDB does. Maybe if KDB is injured, Phil could do this for City. Pep must have seen that England game.

So it was 1 point gained on arsenal, not 2 point lost

funny how football can write a story one day, then the next day speaks volumes
