Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

That starting 11 was a complete shambles of a team. Akanji is as culpable as anyone as he’s just shockingly bad trying to play that hybrid role and how pep can’t see that is beyond me. Rico I have no idea what he was supposed to be doing, stones looked like he hadn’t played for 2 months and Alvarez was as bad as anyone. Walker and Gvardiol looked devoid of any fight and Foden just gives the ball away time after time. All in all a complete shit show and Ederson aside, we’re lucky that wasn’t 4 or 5 nil.

Villa deserved it and were better than us on every single aspect of the game.

Fair to say that was probably our most clueless game of the season so far. We were completely outplayed all over the pitch and in truth, this has been coming.

Pep has a bit of thinking to do with some of these players now. Too many look well off their best, but we have seen this before - normally when the players look like they've dropped a gear it's because Pep has something lined up and he's training for the next phase. I genuinely hope that's the case now because we look seriously off. This time last year I think we had a bit of a poor run but it came good.

I know we should always give players a season to settle, but I'm really starting to struggle to see what Nunes and Kovacic give to the team. You'd have no idea that either of those players had played in the PL before, they were completely overran. Kovacic has at least offered glimpses of being decent but Nunes looks hopeless to me and I can't see anything in his game that looks like he will come good. Unless he does something spectacular in the next few months, he looks a total waste of money to me.

I don't know what's happening with the defence, but at times it was kids football - 3 players on the ball and not watching the runners. Dias and Gvardiol look just slow and clumsy at the minute to me. I honestly think what we need to do is get back to basics and play a defence where we have round pegs in round holes - Walker Stones Dias Ake. Mind, the midfield offered practically no protection and yet nothing going forward either.

My biggest worry is that it's not like we have 10 players out - really we are only missing KdB. Even if he comes back, he's not going to turn this team around on his own. Unless Haaland pulled something out of the hat tonight, I genuinely couldn't see where a goal was coming from.

Pep needs to think and think quickly. Tonight wasn't a one off - we can all live with a one off, but it's been coming and Villa totally deserved the win. They look a very good side to me and I wouldn't be surprised to see them and/or Newcastle getting into the top 4 this year.

I still think we will come good over the season, but right now it's looking like a pretty big hill.

I’m not sure how good Villa are. Got no doubt about us tho. What really pisses me off is why do t we ever play it long through the middle for Haaland especially when it’s bloody obvious Plan A has gone tits up.

What was the thinking in letting go

Gundo, Laporte, Mahrez, Palmer to bring in Nunez, fuckinell.

Philips should have been sold and at least 2 of those that were let go retained.

Worst window by a mile in about 10 years.
