Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

John stones bang average these days and there must be a better rb than nunes .
The whole team are too soft and couldn’t tackle a rice pudding. How many times did we pin them in their own box and they still got out - pathetic!
Nunes gets plaudits often. The reason why utterly escapes me.

But he's not the only problem, we have many. So, so, many, as Pep might say. Although he wouldn't think Savio was one of them. Again, the reason escapes me, because that lad is fucking bollocks bad.

I get what you are getting at mate but the converse is like saying there are no players out there city could by to make the squad better. We as fans don't have access to the scouting and contract data. I'd be surprised if you said there's no one out there tbh

That's not his say or job. We pay people vast sums of money to make those decisions and they've made some shockers. And the man at the top of the coaching and scouting tree isn't exactly covering himself in glory.

I don't care if I get pelters for this, because I'm convinced events are proving me right, but Pep's last contract extension was one too many. Whatever magic he's brought over the eight seasons to 2023/24 has seemingly gone.
I’m sure he can say mate.

Particularly on a forum.

We need to stop playing certain players, in the blind hope that they'll somehow come good.
Which players? I doubt that Pep relies entirely on hope but no one can entirely predict how anyone will perform on the day with so many factors that might affect it. If he plays his ‘favourites’ he gets pelters. So what does he do?

Having a coach that knows he cant be sacked and can do no wrong is a bad thing
He repeated the same mistake 3 years in a row against villa away
The problem he is so stubborn and will never listen to us
All the fans knew that this line up was gonna cost us
But the coach earning millions cant see it
But if we critique him we are considered fake fans it is laughable really
4 posts in 2 n half years and on here after a defeat. Fake fans indeed!

I can easily predict how Savinho is likely to play.

That was crap, lack of movement, passes with no momentum,No City player can sprint .First touch abysmal,a complete waste of time.Don,t try to say such and such player was okay, they were all crap. This forwards-sideways-backwards,makes us so slow to get forward the opposite team is given time to regroup, time wasted.as I said crap.

At the end of the day it'll come down to whether we qualify for the CL.

Nunes is more understandable as he’s played out of position and actually puts in a fair few decent performances. Savinho and Bobb have been wank pretty much every game. As unlikely as it seems, maybe Pep could have got a tune out of Phillips if he had shown the blind faith in him he shows in others. Foden is a luxury player but unfortunately the only one who looks like creating a goal.

The club has bought mediocrity instead of proven quality players these past windows and its showing . Look at Bayerns buisness they were behind Leverkusen then they've bought in quality and with Bayern they are showing what that can do to a team. If you want to stay at the top you've got to buy elite players not squad players. You can't stand still otherwise you get overtaken.

We've had elite midfielders under Pep in the middle now our Midfield is a project rather than elite. Rodri is the only world class elite midfielder. When before we've had Kev, Gundo , David Silva , Fernandinho, Yaya.

We've had elite wingers under Pep where the only stats that matter are goals and assists now we've got two projects players , that are inconsistent and can't be relied on.

The only elite players in our squad right now are Donnarumma, Rodri and Haaalnd. Dias on form maybe.

Instead we've bought project and potential rather than proven players at the top and its starting to show.
100% correct. Outbid for Rice, Bellingham, Wirtz.

Pay peanuts get monkeys

Agreed.

How many of the team today would get in the title winning teams of the last few years?

Haaland and Donnarumma.

Therein lies the problem.

Incredible negativity.

People have unrealistic expectations.

18 months ago we won 4 titles in a row for the first time in the history of English football. In comparison, Arsenal and Liverpool have won 5 PL titles combined. Pep has won 6 in 8 years.

After 23/24, many of the players were either too tired or oldish. So City have started a huge rebuild. Anyone expecting the team to be the best in the league within months after signing 11 new players is a fool. Ferguson needed 3 years to rebuild United between 2003 and 2006. Some United fans thought he was finished.

The idea that you just throw money at the best players and you win the title is silly. Look at Chelsea and now Liverpool. Liverpool won the title last season, spent 400+ millions on "the best players" and lost 4 from the first 9 games.

Anyone who thinks that a rebuild should last no more than 12 months is being naive. Arsenal are building a team for 5 years now and have won fuck all so far. It's very difficult to win and be the best, unless you are lucky like Liverpool last season, when the rivals got many injuries and nobody challenged them.

A rebuild excuse is well and good if you're buying the right players.

Given that neither Nunes or Gvardiol were recruited as full-backs my opinion is that Nunes has adjusted to the role far better than Gvardiol even though he's been forced to play that role for a shorter time. Gvardiol seems like to lack any positional sense in the role. In saying this the bar is not very high.

Pure poetry

If we keep buying players that aren't used to winning, it's very difficult and time consuming to get them to change that mentality overnight

Marmoush, Reijnders, Cherki, Nunes, Ait Nouri, Savinho, Gonzalez of late, all coming from clubs that arent regularly winning trophies; and then couple that up with players like Doku, Bobb and Rico Lewis, who have been getting a lot of minutes over the last few seasons, but are way below the required standard

All of this has resulted in a squad now that is devoid of winners, and the desire to win every single game

Donnarummaa, Dias, Bernardo, Rodri, Foden and Haaland all have the right mentality to be at the club, but are being massively outweighed by a large group of players that wouldn't have gotten near the squad 3 or 4 years ago
I respect your opinion but we have historically forged players into winners. Kompany, Zabba, Silva, Aguero to name a few came to City without having honours previously .
We're going to get the odd defeat at the moment we are nowhere near the finished article but we're on the upward trajectory again and just need to be patient. the league is as strong as its been in my opinion. Players need to step up to the mark though in terms of goals, it's a huge concern the lack of goals spread throughout the team

Don’t think we were as bad as made out on here. Though Onana had a v good game, I don’t think we deserved to lose. A draw would’ve been a fair result. But…

It felt so naive. A bit like the Spurs game we weren’t physical, we were too nice. Where was the reaction when Rogers pushed Gvardiol, where was the reaction when Rogers did a sly push into Nunes and nearly sent him flying into the advertising board? We are so laid back and that applies to our corners too where there is never any pressure on their keeper. Naive to select Bobb and Savio against Villa away. Just so effing naive and for me that makes it so much harder to take.
