Aston Villa (A) - Post-Match Thread

Really thought we'd struggle last night given the team (injuries) and the new manager bounce and crowd hostility over Grealish transfer

Thought we were bang at it from minute 1 extremely impressed.

Helps having the leagues best 2 midfielders by a mile at the moment but they all played a part

Seem to really have the bit between our teeth now, I do think the 3 games rest we'll have (LC QF and Semi's) over Dec and Jan will do us a big favour
I said this at the time and got shouted down.

Going out of the League Cup was a good thing for us this year.

All things considered that was an exceptional win last night.

Would have been easier if Mike Dean avtually refereed the game properly. Clear foul before their corner.

Best performance Sterling has put in for a long time. Looked confident all game.

Ferna's legs are gone. It's a shame but he really needs to be playing dead rubbers/early FA Cup games only now.

Fingers crossed that a few of the others can be back on Saturday.

With the injury situation it now helps. I was at West Ham and was very relaxed about the loss.
Fighting on too many fronts has cost us the Champions League in the past in my opinion.

This year in a closely contested title race it might just be the edge that wins us the league and the CL.

This was always likely to be a very tricky game. It was our fourth in ten days and team selection was made very difficult because key players were not available. In light of this I thought we came through it remarkably well and again showed how our game management has come on quite recently. Our ability to keep the ball and move Villa from side to side when the exertions of the last ten days began to tell on some players meant they could never work up a real head of steam. The crowd got behind them but they were never able to generate the consistent pressure to really threaten that could have posed a real threat, which is just as well because I don't know that we had another gear to engage if they had equalised. Of the players who played last night special mention has to go to Zinchenko, who never lets us down and stretched a very compact Villa team. Cancelo was his usual self (more or less) going forward but had some sloppy moments defensively. Ferna showed that he still oozes class in midfield though his legs are showing the toll taken by nearly a decade of top quality performances for City. Jesus was always industrious, Mahrez always a handful... which leaves Bernardo who was also just himself - on a different planet to everyone else, which isn't surprising because, among other attributes, he appears to have three lungs! What a player and what a goal! Well played City - three points from the trickiest match any of the three contenders had last night.

This, we always end up in a league cup final when the champions league kicks back in. They rescheduled it last year and it fell next the semi versus Psg.

Whilst Chelsea and Liverpool manage league cup quarters and semis we need to be kicking on in the league and get a gap going so we can rest players for the champions league.
