Aston Villa (A) - Post-Match Thread

A big, big result given the circumstances surrounding this game. Our starting XI was strong but we would have been sweating if there were any injuries during the game. That first half was a joy to watch, we were on it from the off and dominated them, great attitude shown by everyone. Bernardo's goal will be rightly lauded and so will Eddie's save, let's not forget that one. Switched off for their goal, so that's one to learn from. Penalties and Mike Dean's performance I've already commented on in the appropriate thread. He wasn't brilliant, he wasn't a c*nt....he was just a bit all over the place. An excellent three points IMO and Villa showed that they can be a threat. The real physical and mental effort our players are putting in should be applauded by everyone. On to Watford....

Fighting on too many fronts has cost us the Champions League in the past in my opinion.

This year in a closely contested title race it might just be the edge that wins us the league and the CL.
If, and obviously this is a big, big, big, big if, we were going to win a treble, a close title race would help because it would essentially remove all talk until we were all of a sudden in semi finals. I swear quadruple talk used to start before we'd even kicked a ball in the FA Cup.

I know what you mean but I'm not sure the "talk" matters hugely to Pep and these players. I's say us running ahead with the league and having the cushion of a number of points is essential for a treble so we can rotate before the big champions league games.

I'm sure that when Spurs beat us 1-0 in the Champs League we played a weakened team because we were head-to-head with Liverpool in the league and couldn't drop a single point. I think we'd have won it that year if it wasn't for that.

Haha, you're probably right, it might be as much about my own stress levels. As much as the team are pros, they are only human, I do wonder if it has a tiny slither of impact, though. One for the sports psychologists.

And on a similar point, I suppose the counter is when we've run away with the league we've struggled to get going in the CL and Liverpool who were similarly stretched did win it that year. When we win it it'll probably when we least expect it and there will be no rhyme nor reason to it. It really is a funny sport, football.

Let's not forget Rubens goal last night. He caught that beautifully and I just loved his celebration. The guy is a fantastic defender and a true leader. As for Bernies goal. Just watch it again. Mahrez's footwork and little pass was brilliant. The pass from Fern superb, Gabby's pass was pinpoint and the finish was just pure world class. Lovely to hear the commentator from City TV describing it. Top performance from the boys and we showed some real grit in that second half to hang onto the lead. Stuff of champions!

I don’t know why you would not acknowledge Raz’s world class dribble and pass that was equally as good as Dias’s goal.

You're dead right. Everything seemed to fall in place perfectly last year of course as we got knocked out of the FA Cup and ran away with the league.

Maybe our destiny is to win it in true glorious fashion on a summer's night in front of 50,000 fans.

Next May would be nice...

is there an alternative commentary to last nights action!
