Aston Villa on Saturday - Pre Match thread.....

I disagree, we keep having good performances & moments where you think "ah this should give us a boost". E.g. recently we just won the League Cup & had a great performance away at Kiev - few days later we get hammered by a Liverpool reserve team.

Teams won't fear us this season, we consistently fail (spectacularly usually) to beat anyone in the top half, beating Villa 5-0 doesn't change that. We just need the points, we're not suddenly going to turn a corner this late into the season & go on a 10 match winning run - we just need to scrape our way to top 4 & get it sorted next season.

A negative view perhaps, but a far more realistic one than expecting us to turn a corner if we give Villa a beating I'm afraid.

With the possible exception of Kiev I can't remember a great performance. The cup win was certainly not a great performance.

We not only need to win but win convincingly. Something that we've not done in the premier league for some time.

Look at Leicester they are playing with utter confidence, something we have failed to do for some time.

Fantastic win 3-1 away at Sevilla, followed up with draw with Villa & spanking by Liverpool at home.
Beat Sot'on 3-1 then Hull 4-1; next game got hammered by Stoke.
Beat Gladbach 4-2, top the group ahead of Juve with United getting knocked out of CL; next game get played off the pitch at home to Swansea then lose to Arsenal.
Good 3-0 win away at Norwich in cup, draw at home to Everton next game.
Good 4-0 win home to Palace, draw with West Ham next game.
Big win in semi against Everton followed by 4-0 win away at Villa in cup, followed up with being 2nd best to Sunderland & then losing 3 PL matches in a row (with a 5-1 loss in between those losses).
Win away at Kiev, then a deserved win in the cup final; followed by another hammering to Liverpool reserves.

Maybe I'm watching a different season to you, but we've had a fair number of good performances/results (as shown by my examples) that could easily have spurred us on to better things, yet all are followed by extremely poor results.

We've had no consistency all season, in fact the only consistent thing is how poorly we've done against decent opposition. Another 4-0 win against Villa will not suddenly make our team confident or make United suddenly fear us when they come up here in a few weeks time. I'd be delighted if beating Villa tomorrow would turn our season around trust me, but I'd rather look at the facts & it seems pretty clear that the most likely scenario is the same pattern to continue until the end of the season.

Who is the ref for tomorrow? I don't see a thread on it. Apologies if it is posted somewhere else though.

Somebody said it was the MANUre fan so I'm thinking Taylor, but could be Mason. We haven't had the latter for a while at The Etihad.

Edit: It's Mason! I hope he's brushed up on the black and white version rather than the Royal Exchange version that he invariably applies.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this. We've played better in cup games, but in the premier league we may have won games but I can't remember a top quality performance.

I'd agree with you and say we've been dreadfully inconsistent.

Anyway, I for one would like to leave the game tomorrow having won (obviously) and done so convincingly
