Asylum seekers: Napier Barracks and Penally camp 'filthy and run-down'

I agree.

To put a positive light on this it goes to show the system is working, the accommodation falls below acceptable standards and is picked up by the inspection teams.

Next steps is put it right and then figure out how it happened in the first place.
In my opinion its another case of outsourcing gone wrong.

When will the Govt learn the lessons that outsourcing delivers below par results.

na, you were privileged to have accommodation like that. Now it's housing asylum seekers it's institutionalised racism of course.
Don't be a fool, its not institutionalised racism, its lack of human decency. It was lack of human decency when Cheesy was housed there and its still lacking in human decency now.

You might be right mate. I’d turn that around and say when will these outsourcing firms realise they can’t deliver below standard products to maximise their revenues.

I’ve not forgotten about those embarrassing food parcels sent out by that Chartwells group company, to me, it’s exactly the same problem of profit before service. Well you know what? fuck them. I’ve got nowt against profit but don’t call that shit “a service”. I reminded a CEO of an organisation whom had asked another of their group companies to tender for supplying food, I expressed concern that their reputation might be damaged by association- they were subsequently rejected - obviously I won’t know why but I fucking hope it was because they are cheeky cunts and that they was told that. These companies need to be held accountable - the country is going through the mill right now and these charlatans need bringing to task

And I would agree wholeheartedly.

I've stayed in Napier a few times, though quite a few years ago now, the accommodation then was basic but a LOT better than quite a lot of other places we were sent.
Though the portions in the cookhouse were never enough, and the beer in the Naafi wasn't the best (still drunk it though)

What does decrepid actually mean? TBH i didnt find the report that helpful or informative. The pictures i saw last night looked as if it needed a lick of paint and a clean. They mentioned and showed that some accommodation was dormitory type. Is this really unacceptable?
Depends on a few different things. Firstly, is there a pandemic going on? If so, probably not a good idea to host people in dorms. Secondly, how long are you planning on hosting them there? If it's just for a few weeks, then it's probably not a big issue, but if you're expecting families to live somewhere like that for months or even years, then no it's not. And then of course pictures don't necessarily tell you about the standards of the facilities. Is there enough hot water? Is there adequate heating? Etc.

This is a government inspector who has declared them unfit for habitation, so I imagine there are problems that are more serious than a need for a lick of paint. They mention cleanliness, which can cause all sorts of health problems. If there's damp and mould, that could cause problems too. A number of people have mentioned spending time there with the military, but let's be honest, the military probably took pretty good care of it, whereas some private contractor looking to make a profit, as always, will do the bare minimum, which is why they should be nowhere near public services where there's no competition motive.

Well i mentioned heating, Soldiers still use dorms so if its good enough for our troops its good enough for asylum seekers. Also perhaps we should supply the asylum seekers with some cleaning products and let them clean it themselves rather than pay someone to clean it for them. I guess most of us clean our own accomodation so I see nothing wrong with that, I guess we are not making their beds for them so why cant they be responsible for their own cleanliness. Lets be honest its not much too expect.

Well I'm sure they are expected to clean their own accommodation, but the difference is that when the rest of us rent a house, it's already been professionally cleaned by the time we get the keys. A government inspector has deemed it unfit for human habitation. If that happened in a private house, the person who owned it wouldn't be allowed to rent it out until it'd been brought up to standard. I don't see why it should be any different for asylum seekers' accommodation.

And just for the record, I don't think it hasn't been declared unfit because they're dorms, except in the very specific context of coronavirus. Plenty of countries that have otherwise done pretty well containing the virus (Singapore, Malaysia, etc) have had outbreaks at the accommodation of low-paid workers who are housed in tightly-packed dorms. Not housing people in dorms is as much to protect the rest of us as the asylum seekers themselves.
