Athletics Thread

It’s always fascinated me speed walking. I always wonder just how and why anybody would ever get into it?

Don’t get me wrong. They are incredible athletes at elite level. The top guys are walking at nearly 10 MPH.

Put that in context, the fastest 50K walkers don’t take too much longer than 3.5 hours. That would be a respectable marathon time for a runner. And it’s about five miles further and they’re fucking walking. Mental.
i am a good 10k amateur runner. started running after 34 years old. PB 10k is 38minutes. it is a good speed for an amateur; i get medals in local amateur races.
now those guys are walking my personal best running speed while walking. insane...
by the way i dont think that is healthy for knees...dont know much about that walking thing.

38 minutes is superb and quick. My son is getting into athletics at the moment (currently sat at a track in Blackburn watching him do reps) and some of the runners here are incredible. 18 year olds who just absolutely fly round and are only regional/low level national runners. Makes you appreciate how fast someone like keeley Hodgkinson is or even Ingabritson who are just both amazing.

Looking forward to watching the athletics over the next 8/9 days, some cracking races to lol forward to.

thanks... greetings to your son.
i understood how fast 10k world record speed (it is below 3 minutes/km) after i started 10k running. that speed is close to my sprint, which i can sustain only a few hundred meters. also i use my unaerobic system when i sprint, those guys are using oxygen(aerobic) while doing it... i make lots of literature review about long distance running etc.. still cant understand how they do it...

As has been my wont for a couple of years, I will be looking out for Hodgkinson vs Mu in W800m. Mu has not been very active recently so Hodge stands a good chance.
Two wonderful talents at the top-level of world-class. They won't have it their own way though.

s.hassan (nl) just finished 1500 heat, tonight 10k final. she ll also run 5k i think
unbelievable...

That’s right, I’ve seen Moraa beat her twice in big races.
I think the head to head is about 5-4 in Keely's favour, not a lot between them. Keely beats her in a fast race imo but Moraa win's in a sprint off a slower pace, throw in Mu and it's a hard one to call.

Guys I thought I’d read Mu’s coach (the infamous Bobby Kersee) had pulled her out, so she could ‘train for the Olympics next year’.

(Similar story about Sydney M too).

After all, it’s only the Worlds …
