Athletics Thread

Watching it now on BBC3

I enjoy watching athletics and while I don't know any names since the days of Cram, Coe, Ovett & Carl Lewis, Ben Johnson (and Alan Wells) ..........that run by the winner in the womens 5k was phenomonal, fantastic achievement

Really enjoying it and will stick with it for the duration of the evening - especially as MOTD2 will only have one goal to show from todays matches!!

(Footnote - I also remember Whitbread, Sanderson and Daley Thompson!!)

But yeah, really enjoy watching athletics
You’ve joined us on the final day of the athletics calendar of 2023;) We’ll bump the thread at the start of the season next year and remember it’s the Olympics, so it will be extra special:)

Duplantis is some talent isn’t he? Great value for the sport, especially in what is such an exciting discipline for the spectators.

Amusan’s win, I’m less inspired by. We certainly know her whereabouts tonight don’t we?

Did they say Duplantis is still only 23? Sometimes you watch him and he just flies over that bar.

Great race from Hodgkison and Mu.

2 National Records. Unlucky for Hodgkinson again.

She should have done what Mu does in the home straight and move out, make the challenger run in lane 3.

Not sure what the rules are on the prize money but Mu doesn't deserve it on a wildcard entry. Not fair on those who compete all season.

Mu gets the money.

Typical yanks, Mu has been given a wildcard to run in the women's 800m despite not taking part in one single diamond league meeting all season. She's now eligible to win the 30k first prize, bet the other girls aren't happy.
Totally unfair and I for one am not in with this love in for Mu. If not done the grafting throughout the season then you shouldn’t be allowed to compete with the rest of the runners who aren’t as fresh, as the commentators keep reminding us for those who haven’t competed recently. Shame for Keely, but an excellent run nonetheless.

So it appears they are giving Mu the diamond league title as well, despite this being the only race she's run all season and despite the rumours that she wouldn't be given it, shambles that.

She's class but that's just not right.

A league system for athletes only works if it's the same athletes competing all season.

Well said.

Not fair on the athletes that compete all season. The prize money is massive for athletes in this sport.
Notice how Mu hasn't been given the trophy? She's not eligible for that but gets the money. In fact Keely will get the trophy but they haven't even shown her with it, probably embarrassed, having to explain what's gone on.

Is that true? I read an article on the Diamond League's website only days ago explaining the wildcard situation.

The did give Mu the trophy, saw her with it before she ran over to a couple of people in the crowd. Maybe they made a mistake. Lots of people tweeting she's won the title, maybe cause they spotted her with the trophy.

I noticed the Diamond League twitter hasn't tweeted that she's the champion, so maybe it is just the money. Still not fair on those that earned the right to be in the final.

Michael Johnson has tweeted about this in the past, said a league system only works if it's the same athletes competing all season, said if somebody becomes faster over the season outside of the league then they can earn the right to be in next years league.

Mu had her chance at the championships, failed and is essentially given another championship race. I'm sure a few of those women in that race would have loved a bye to the final.

I’m not sure $30k winnings for finishing first in today’s sport is massive? The winner of the weekly Diamond League gets $10k. The money reduces with each lower place. Unless you get a place you’re not going to get any financial winnings.
I totally agree with you about Mu though.

Agreed

You'd be surprised in athletics, with coaches, flights, training, medical etc... to pay for. I imagine Keely is earning enough to be living comfortably but it's the trickle down affect for other athletes in that race who will probably be making just enough to compete.

Anyway don't want to jump on Mu too much, she's a class act, just don't like the way that was done tonight.

The Olympics next year between those 2, 3 with Moraa should make a bloody good race.
