Atletico (H) | CL QF 1st Leg | Post Match Thread

The difference with Phil on the pitch is that where he receives the ball for the goal, he is immediately turning forward and taking it on the front foot.
He’s engaged four defenders in their box and pick a pass through to the space.

First half, that ball was being first time passed back to where it came from.
We needed players receiving it in the box with the control and vision to turn towards goal.

He’s a two footed gift to City. I hope he keeps developing like this and Pep keeps his head screwed on. When he’s on his game he’s impossible to stop.
I think the duration of Pep’s tenure is crucial to Phil’s continuous development. As is the case for a lot of our players.

Spineless cunts. I saw one or two people saying "what do you expect them to do against us"?
This is Atletico Madrid in the the champions league, not fucking Stoke in the league cup.
They have been like that for years under Simeone that's just his style of play, I agree with what your saying it's not the type of football we like watching but it has worked for him over the years he was a couple of minutes away from winning a Champions League playing that way and he's won league titles too. Absolutely horrific to watch but it's effective. Every one of them are snidey cunts that no their job in the side and it's hard to break them down.

Spanish Burnley, I hope we never have to play these shithouses again. What is the point of a football club that doesn't want to play football! Simeone is a complete **** who needs decking for his disgusting lack of sportsmanship. I don't understand why any Athletico fan would want him in charge, it's soul destroying and would make you give up football.
They won the league

Just been on Twitter ........yes i know ,should have known better.

Wasn't Benfica the Scousers were playing tonight but Peek Real Madrid.

We smash the Scousers weekend self harming will be a big thing in Candleville for the next few months.

I know there’s all the talk about goals and assists with Grealish, but what he does do which was evident tonight is he completely slows the game down to frustrate the defenders. So many times he would get the ball then put his back against the defender to frustrate. He’s brilliant at getting fouls you sometimes need a player like that. He had Atleticos players losing All their discipline.

He also was apparently trash talking Vrsaljko winding him up

Considering Atletico played a 6-4-0, tonight was a good result. We played very well against a tight & compact team whose game plan was to give nothing away, stifle our creativity by denying us space & strangling the match in the process.

They posed more of a potential threat in terms of Griezmann & Felix than an actual threat, & because of our level of control, they rarely threatened at all.

Tonight was another of those matches where a clinical striker might have made more capital out of our dominance. Atletico are in a rich vein of form, so to control them the way we did for 90 minutes takes some doing & is a measure of this special team.

A special mention to Aké who I thought had an excellent game. KDB produced the moment of magic we needed, & Foden supplied the killer pass of the match with his first set of touches.

It's only half time, but I'd rather be in our position putting the onus on Atletico to come at us, which they're more than capable of doing. Their worry is that will leave space behind which we can exploit & we're more than capable of capitalising on any gaps they leave & punish them.

The next fortnight is crucial. All we can do is ball our lungs out in support, but it's down to Pep & the lads to do what we know they're capable of. Roll on Sunday. Let's do this! )(
