Going back to prematch “anthems” couldn’t
@1894mancity persuade City to give Don’t Look Back in Anger a try? I know not everybody loves Oasis but everyone (including the tourists) know the words, it’s a Manc anthem by a band of City fans and it lasts more than 15 secs before a shit clappy version. I really think 50000 singing that at k.o. would be spine tingling. Hey Jude has had its day and half the prem sing it.
What do the lyrics mean? What connection do the lyrics have to this football club or to going out and playing a football match? Who’s Sally? What is she waiting for? What are we not looking ‘back in anger’ at? What is not looking back on anger got to do with a football match?
We’ve never sung it as a set of fans (Villa have though), it’s not got inspirational or pertinent lyrics, it’s not saying anything we can get behind… it’s just one of my favourite bands most commercial and meaningless songs.
Now, if you said to me The Hollies ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’… then you’d be talking!
… The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where, who knows where
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
… So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We'll get there
… For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
… If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another
… It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on the way to there
Why not share?
… And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
… He's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
Lyrics that football fans can get behind. The lyrics are pertinent to going out and performing for each other, standing shoulder to shoulder with our brothers as fans in the stands and the same for the players on the pitch to face the adversity in front of us.
We’ll always be there for each other, as brothers!
I’d argue that song is up there with Joy Division ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ as the greatest Manchester song.
