Attack in Forbury gardens (Reading)

I think that's fair enough from a police perspective although I think he was talking more about fellow posters on the thread last night, some of whom refused to believe this could have had anything to do with terror.

What I question about police procedure though in the aftermath of many of these attacks is the way many suspects are often detained on mental health grounds. The same hesitancy the police show in arresting someone for crimes relating to terrorism should be shown when detaining them for 'mental health reasons' because it's the first excuse any terrorist now uses in court like the guy who committed the stabbings in Victoria Station a couple of years ago.

I can assure you that seeking a charge and conviction takes precedence over mental health act assessments and detention.

"Failure of immigration policy" ?
Only a tiny fraction of immigrants who have settled here are terrorists mate.
The vast majority are law abiding citizens just wanting to better their lifes in a terrorist free society within the UK.

I agree but that's not to say letting this guy slip through the net - assuming he came into this country legally - wasn't a big failure.

It would be interesting to know on what grounds the authorities believed that this guy, or people in the same position as this guy, would benefit the country.

When dreadful things like this happen people naturally get very upset. But you have
to remember that its not the media that run the investigation, its not social media; its the police, who are very good at this. Its extremely foolhardy to jump to conclusions as much as people want to. The crime is horrific. Police for one aren't politicians.

last night would have been all about securing and preserving evidence.

The declaration of a terrorist incident this morning isnt for the benefit of the public but primarily for purposes in law which gives specific powers around detention and utilising national assistance.

It may seem boring but let the police investigate it. The police will brief the press with what they need to, nothing more.

Odd the same people condoning and supporting a narrative of "collective guilt", "reparations", "systemic prejudice and inequality" over the past few weeks because it suited their ideology are now so quick to shut down the same discussion because the shoe's on the other foot.

Sums the whole thing up for what it is though.

I struggle to see how this can be classified as a terrorist incident if the Police say they don't think anyone else was involved nor are they looking for anyone else.

Surely, there would have to be some kind of back up if it's terrorist related? Maybe a group? Or a forum? Though a cell seems unlikely given they're not looking for anyone else?

definition is basically 'violence in pursuit of political aims'

secondly PACE allows 24 hours of detention, plus 12 with Superintendent's authority and then to Mags court. Under TACT it gives you much longer to investigate-
