Credit to Pardew and Ranieri, and Eddie Howe also I would say, but Pellegrini has outperformed them all in August. More money does not mean an easier task, just different challenges and pressures. We get beat by Chelsea it is not ok, if Bournemouth do then it is 'expected'. If we beat West Brom then it is expected, if Leicester beat them it is a good victory. Different expectation, but the same amount of points available at the end of the day.
Give that some had Pellegrini out of a job just a few weeks ago, to oversee several key players incoming, help Kompany and Yaya rediscover their form and stand by them, play attacking football, oversee a shift in formation, beat last years' champions comprehensively, not concede a goal... all of these factors should trump anything any other manager has done so far.
That said, for Pellegrini to lose out on manager of the year despite winning the league in his first season here, means I fully expect him to not be awarded manager of the month now given the questionable competence of those making the decision. I mean, Pardew being given it in 2011-12 for finishing 5th with Newcastle, then Pulis for getting Palace 11th in 2013-14, both great achievements but I mean, really? Seems to be a UK bias going on from what i can see too - only Wenger and Mourinho have ever won premier league manager of the season and are not British. No non-British manager has ever been awarded manager of the season in a year where he has not won the league. In contract four Brits have been awarded the prize despite not clinching silverware of any kind, and Pellegrini's snub in particular stands out for me due to him overseeing two trophy wins in his first season in charge.
The only times the manager of the team who won the league did not win manager of the season are:
2000-2001 - The scum won it but Scot George Burley of Ipswich won Manager of the year, finishing fifth.
2009-2010 - Chelsea won it but Englshman Harry Redknapp of Spurs won Manager of the Year, finishing fourth. Mourinho also did the double, winning the FA Cup.
2011-2012 - We won it with Mancini in charge but Englshman Alan Pardew of Newcatle won Manager of the Year, finishing fifth.
2013-2014 - We won it with Pellegrini in charge but Englshman Tony Pulis of Crystal Palace won Manager of the Year, finishing eleventh after joining Palce mid-season and overseeing a second half recovery from the relegation zone. Pellegrini however also completed the double, winning the league cup also in his first season in English football.
