Autophagy (and fasting).

Yeah I've heard of it and like every male I've tried it but I think you need to have a rib removed to do it successfully

When i am on keto i eat between 11 and 4pm , once settled on it i dont feel hungry at all, fasting is good for you
Similar for me kaz, I eat between 1pm and 7pm
Fast for 18 hours. Done it for years.
Doctor gave me the idea.

Interesting replies.
I've ALWAYS had breakfast so was a surprise to find people who never have at (natuaklkly rather than following a diet - they just don't find themselves hungry at that time).
A friend park runs on an empty stomach (I'd need at least a banana or fruit bar just for a spike in energy).
Even though I think I'm consuming a small breakfast (without questioning whether I need breakfast) I'm still constructing a meal of porridge, bran flakes, fruit and nuts and a banana in a bowl (with either oat milk or dairy).

I'll just trial it for a while and try brunch/early lunch and lift that evening meal to a much earlier time - essentially skipping out a meal but still having my drinks through out the day (coffee, tea, decaf coffee and matcha with plenty of water.

I've been eating past 10pm for years and years (always put it down to some mythical Mediterranean blood) - convinced this isn't the best idea, but often due to my evening schedules.

It might be worth you downloading the podcast “The diary of a CEO’ by Stephen Bartlett and the interview with Doctor Tim Spector.

He is one of the leading lights in Gut Health and discusses the topic in some details how fasting allows the bugs (gut microbiome) to increase in number and keep your gut healthy by carrying the repairs to your gut during this period. This can offer various health benefits such as improving mood, increasing energy levels to fighting anxiety. Well worth a listen.

I have just started to eat all my food within a 10 hour window and then let my gut recover for 14 hours each day.

Not aware of him personally mate but it’s a great call and I’d urge everyone to read up on ‘gut health’ regardless of anything ‘Intermittent Fasting’ related.
Was fortunate enough to be privy to the earlier studies regarding gut health and pre/pro-biotics they were doing over a decade ago (through one of the old board owners I knew who was involved) and it became pretty clear, pretty quickly just how much we’d underplayed and underestimated the roll gut health plays in our general health and well being, that (and our hormones) massively influence what we are health wise.

Never fasted in my 50 years......I pretty much eat every 3 hrs.

While that can be a pain in the arse.....along with regular weights sessions,it has worked brilliantly for me.

Yeah, all interesting.
That Autophagy is supposedly the holy grail for fasting, but the jury is still out and lots of research being carried out.

Pays to listen to your own body and we're all different but I do think I could benefit from cutting down on the amount of times I eat. I'm carrying some surplus chonk even with being active in the gym (and running when I can).

Yes very true. There have been studies on injecting human faeces into sterile mice from people who struggle with depression and found that mice then suffer similarly. Even more than fitness it appears having a healthy gut can have massive impact on your overall health and wellbeing.

There is an app/company called Zoe which is doing a huge amount of research into this topic. They test peoples gut health and prescribe individually targeted diet plans to improve peoples gut health and monitor the results. The cost runs into the hundreds but already over 250k people have signed up in the Uk so although the tests are prohibitively expensive its still going to be a massive dataset of information for future research.

They also run a podcast which is also very informative.

What do people think about fruit in these fasting gaps?
I have always had an apple at breakfast (before my breakfast which includes a banana) and one at lunch.

First day of skipping breakfast but I did have an apple with my cup of tea.

19 grams of sugar- could make you hungry?

5 days per week I only eat one meal the other two I usually have brunch and dinner. I drink water and black coffee.

When you say ‘fasting’ for autophagy, does that mean not even consuming water?

What the hell has an autobahn got to do with this discussion? Ok you’ve corrected it now. I guess the curse of autocorrect?

Water is ok during the fasting phase. Apparently black coffee is beneficial during the fasting phase as it aids autophagy, supposedly green tea is good too.

Green tea is superb,i try to follow each meal with a cup as it helps regulate blood sugar amongst its many benefits.

Was reading a study (or rather an article on a decent study done at Bath University) the other day, weight loss being the target of the study, they chose 3 different study groups :-
1/ IF but the 5:2 ( which I’ve never been a fan of).
2/ Traditional smaller meals.
3/ DODO diet (as per Drew Price)

All same calorie restriction etc.

I’ll link you to the findings mate, think you’ll be interested (and pleased lol) to see them, personally I’m disappointed they didn’t do the 16/8 as the IF group and think it would have shown a different figure but anyway, here it is :-

If you have a brew in the morning wave tarra to auautophagy...youve just broken your fast...your break-fast.

Breakfast isnt needed past your prime, all your doing is wearing your organs out...you want to be at least 20 hrs to see some autophagy....eating at ten at night is a beltin way to reduce your life expectancy.
Middle age spread is a myth...if you eat the same amount of food you did when in your prime then have a word with your ego cause its fukin with ya...every inch of fat gathered on a males middle correlates to 13% greater chance of kopping for a page full of cancers...

Fasting stops your telemers shortening ( so does laffin a lot) which is a good for swerving cancerous growth.

Stanley mathews fasted on a monday, played in one form or another till his 70th yr

I think its a big no, no. I think its typically only water and black tea/coffee which is appropriate.

Think a few on here are confusing the natural occurrence of Autophagy n that of 'Self induced' Autophagy.
