Someone mentioned it a few posts back, but from my experience The Head of Steam pub, which I believe is literally next door to the train station (hence the name), was always a good boozer. Worth a pint in at least after getting off the train.

re; union room - good shout, its a massive pub with several rooms and loads of tele's. u need to turn right as you come out of the station .
