this is going to sound strange, but I gave up on most music a long time ago.
I found almost everything in the past couple of decades to be repetitive, uninspiring, souless and talentless. However, in hindsight I was probably just not exposed to the right type of music.
I still don't like a lot of stuff that is in the charts, but I do have a softspot for bands like Mumford and Sons.
As for awful, its very subjective.
I could never really understand the love for bands like Oasis (some excellent songs, a lot very dull), or Keane, Kasabian, and as for the likes of Blink 182 mentioned above, I cannot stand them.
I've always liked the likes of the Beatles, the stones, probably influenced by my old man, and enjoy the likes of Ry Cooder, The Band, Tom Waits. Not sure why, the music just appealed to me.
My sister is a musician, however, and is very snobbish when it comes to music, I think maybe she had an impact on my attitude, either by making me more selective, or by complaining so much about popular music that I got bored of her whining and stopped listening to it.
