This family club, home grown jargon Atletico sprout is fine. Good for them and the people of Bilbao if it makes them feel better and feel loved. However a professional footballer worth his salt with any sort of ambition should want to get the most out of his career, play with the best, and challenge himself against the best in the most competitive league in the world. Not stay at home, play the europa league in a good year, hope to finish 6th and still being breast fed by mama. It says more about his character and lack of drive more than anything else. That being the case he is not the type of player who has a mentality to cut the rigours and demands of premier league football, especially under a manager like Pep.
His loss and he will regret his decision. We dodged a bullet and we move on to someone better, physically, technically and mentally.

Ridiculous for people to say he has a lack of ambitionwhen they have no knowledge of the player or the discussions/negotiations that have gone on.

Believe it or not City are not at the pinnacle of world football. We just finished fourth in the league and whilst we're all very excited about Pep it doesn't automatically make us the top of every player's wish list.

I'd say aiming to be at Barca within the next couple of seasons would be more ambitious than coming to us and if that is indeed his aim, continuing to develop himself at Bilbao is clearly a better way of achieving that.

That was my first thought on hearing his 'intentions'

I think Barca have had their claws in and thats where i see him playing very soon - loyalty only extends so far when such ludicrous amounts of money are up for grabs, and too many fingers will be wanting their slice.

Almost certainly imo.

If not Barca, the other lot. He won't be at Bilbao for years unless his performance level drops.

We have the resources and ambition and now the manager to achieve our goal of being the best in Europe, what is Atletico's ambition? the same? Doubt it. All I'm saying is that his decision to re sign and comit to Atletico long term with a more expensive buyout clause shows he wants to stay there rather than go to a club with serious ambition to be the best in Europe.

I reckon he's happy with his lot in life so far and he's hardly hitting his late twenty early thirties. There's plenty of time for him to make a big move in the future. To make it as a professional footballer in the first place takes plenty of drive and character so throwing out that accusation seems petty to say the least.

Fair play to Laporte.

Not joining us doesn't mean he's "bottled it" and I don't think he'll regret the decision one bit. He'll be even more adored by their fans now.

Plenty of embarrassing tantrums were being thrown last night and I can see why Athletic fans feel the need to defend themselves.

A talented young player but he's not exactly one of the best in the world is he? On to the next one.

Hi mate.....I've had time to calm down this morning after the news!;) but got to admit, some of the rumours/comments the club leaked to the press, after the news came out just didnt help the situation.....all this "not first option" and "too expensive for a young player" reports seemed a bad move and we would haven been better off just keeping silent...we laugh at the rags for doing this and these rumoured press leaks just seemed to be a bad PR move to hide our disappointment at missing out on the player...

I agree, I respect Laporte for staying, he must really love his club to turn down an extra 3mil a year salary and dont have any issue with him staying, he made the move that was right for him! Good luck to the lad!...Txiki now just needs to move quicker than he has done in past summers, if we want the squad anywhere near being set by the time Pep arrives..

But you have literally no idea what he wants. For all you know he might have a very strong belief that one of the biggest clubs in Europe will be along in the next season or two if he carries on playing well. I've never even seen him play but if he's as good as people suggest he is and he has complete faith in his own abilities then it's sensible with respect to his long term ambitions to continue homing his skills in la liga. The way people are confidently declaring the guy to be an unambitious mummy's boy is just daft. They should probably put their own dummy back in first!
