Aymeric Laporte

I think Mangala & Otamendi are miles better equipped for the Premier League than the other players we signed since Lescott was declared out of favour, who are either too slow, too wussy or both, but it's not easy coming to this league, especially under a manager like Pellegrini, & imo they have both been pretty much chucked in at the deep end, without much help & it's damaged their game.

No guarantee it wouldn't happen to Laporte or Stones, even under a different manager though.

Every single player or manager who comes to the Premier League tells anyone who will listen, how it's completely different, yet folks still don't seem to believe them for some reason.
None of us know for sure why Laporte has changed his mind but I wouldn't blame him if he decided that staying in Spain and backing himself to get to one of the top clubs there would be a hell of a lot less of a gamble in terms of his career than a move to England where anything could happen.

People are saying he's changed his mind, but days before this announcement, the MUEN were claiming City were going to play him at left back, so perhaps he never fancied it in the first place.

True but ETA only declared a cessation of hostilities in 2011 an still exists. What makes the Basque situation different is that they are a bit like The Kurds. A distinct people split across national borders. The Catalonia grievances were more about the history of the region stemming from the Civil War and the Franco fascist regime.

That is what fuels the bitter Barca-Real Madrid rivalry.

I still think this whole thing about how poor we were defensively is overdone but it is the future that now concerns me and whilst I would like to see some new blood at CB, and throughout the team, I anticipate that we can improve under our new manager, especially in terms of the whole team defending as a unit.

Laporte sounds like an interesting prospect but I think there's a plethora of alternatives in terms of the way forward. I think it is a pity that he could not make his mind up definitively sooner but the club needs to move onto plan B quickly.
We were poor defensively as a team. Front to back including forwards and striker, not necessarily back four or two centre halves alone. Better defensive systems for the whole team and our back four and two centre halves will look better.

I don't know about Basques but he's probably better wearing one than joining us if he's happy to forgo the best Manager in football, being paid a kings ransom, winning trophies and challenging the best as opposed to finishing 5th and winning SFA! Bullet swerved if you ask me!

Exactly.

Well the Manchester Evening News did not buy City's not fussed PR. They plaster it as 'Laporte in snub to Blues' as their main back page headline and no mention of the stuff City leaked last night.

I think that hasty attempt to save face needs to be investigated internally and lessons learned as it was a foolish 'plan' and may have hardened reporters to play up the snub angle more than they would have done.

Sometimes silence is better than ill judged blurting out.

What was said last night was more like some hasty thoughts of a fan in here trying to cover up disappointment and hurt pride and not someone in control of PR at a major club.

I get that they had invested time and effort and it was a blow. But these things happen in football quite often and you have to rise above them and not show you are wounded. That just looks a little unprofessional.

For me last night's response is a worse result here than losing the player as I thought we were better than that.

As a club we should have issued a statement accepting his decision and admiring his loyalty and wishing him well and say we will move on. That would have been the right thing to do and classy and nothing more was needed.
