Aymeric Laporte

I think overall Laporte is fantastic but he has become a casualty of Peps defensive changes. Pep used to accept defensive errors as an inevitability of his defenders playing out from the back. In a large majority of games this was fine but how many times did we see these defensive errors cost us in big games?

Pep has become a lot more pragmatic and he wants the defensive lapses that both Laporte and Cancelo were susceptible to eradicated, even if the trade-off is our defenders not being as progressive in possession. I don’t believe that a couple of years ago Pep would have ever preferred Ake over Laporte but he certainly does now. I would hazard a guess that is why Gvardiol is top of Peps wanted list…defends as well/better than Ake and is also up there with Laporte with the ball at his feet.
Sensible take but also throw in the fact that Laporte and to a lesser extent Cancelo are not hugely quick and can't recover if they make an error one on one on the half way line. As you say, this has been costing us.

I'm amazed at the lack of interest, its truly bizarre. Not many clubs have better.
Even wanting to go, I'd guess not many clubs can pay anything close to Premier League wages, and there may not be many clubs he'd consider anyway.

I suspect it's going to become a bigger "problem" for Premier League teams, as the clubs that can compete with even mid/lower-table PL clubs is getting smaller each year.

My surprise includes PL clubs.

Don't think it is a lack of interest. Think it is more clubs keeping cards close to their chests to get more of a bargain the later on it goes. Even at 50m, some club will get a bloody bargain and one hell of a defender. But go in early, and we can look for a fair price.

PL clubs I think are a non-starter. He won't be dropping a level, and will want a top club (which is us in the PL) and abroad is his beat option. Same applies to Saudi.
