WAYNE Rooney’s stunning decision to stay at Old Trafford pocketed him a pay hike of £50,000 a week – and earned Sir Alex Ferguson a £60m transfer kitty.
Shocked Manchester United fans were celebrating last night after Rooney’s dramatic U-turn saw him pen a new five-year deal to stay at the club.
Rooney has signed a contract worth £140,000 a week, making him the highest-paid star in the club’s history.
The staggering deal will see the England hitman trouser a whopping £33.6m plus bonuses and add-ons until 2015.
But Starsport understands that the clinching factor in Rooney deciding to pledge his future to Old Trafford was a promise from the Glazers that Fergie would be given the funds he wanted to make at least two big-name signings before next season.
Top of Fergie’s list are Inter Milan’s Dutch ace Wesley Sneijder and Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.
United announced the news at lunchtime after Rooney had apologised to his team-mates and Fergie.
Rooney, who is expected to return from his ankle injury at Manchester City on November 10, said: “I am signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history.
“That is why I joined the club in the first place."
