At this moment in time that's really not that wild a suggestion. Spurs without a proper forward were still largely useless even with Bale. We give them a proper forward and suddenly they're a much more fearsome team. Bale has a lot of potential and a lot of hype but that shouldn't be mistaken for someone who is a world class player now. Adebayor has 6 years experience on him and has arguably contributed more to Spurs season than Bale has. Unfortunately for Ade he never scored a hat trick at the San Siro, and is a bit of a twat.
That's not to say all your other points re: why Bale is worth far more than Adebayor don't still stand. A straight swap is clearly daft. Still not convinced Bale would be good at City though. He'd be smashing at the Rags.
I'm not disputing Ade's impact at Spurs or his importance to them, merely pointing out there are other points which need to be considered when estimating a player's value. Personally I wouldn't pay more than £25m for Bale and I agree he'd be superb for united, fortunately they're broke though.
