Is he the ultimate master at penalties, or just a cocky git who has been lucky so far? I can't quite decide.

Elano was without doubt the previous master. Hit the ball hard into the side netting and it's pretty much unsavable no matter what the keeper does, and that was Elano's style. I don't think he ever missed one for us did he? I would be amazed if he did because he was lethal.

But Balo's style is wierd. The stuttering, slow run up and then casually "passing" the ball into the net with the keeper going the wrong way every time. I would like to believe he has so much skill that he actually waits to see which way the keeper is going and then decides at the last minute which side to pass the ball into. It certainly looks like that.

Or is he just dead jammy? Fecking brilliant either way! The one last night was awesome. Again.

He can see the keepers stance as he runs up and see which way the keeper is preparing to dive, if you watch that Ronaldo show all about his body where he scores in the dark from positioning that's how he does it he's awesome!

It does seem to look like he relies on the keeper going in the direction he dummies. I expect the video research will catch up with him soon.

thats exactly what he does, so much composure as well as skill to master that.

I'm very curious to see what he'll do when a keeper decides not to move early. I think he was lucky last night in that Diego Lopez probably didn't know too much about Balotelli's penalty style, so he fell for the dummy. His next one in the Premier League will be interesting.

hasn't he put them all to the keeper's left?

was gonna post this question.

sure he's gone for the same corner everytime.

when he takes one i expect him to do something stupid, rather than just put it in the net.

his run up makes me nervous.

if he missed it last night it would have been deemed a shocking penalty, but cause the keeper went the other way it makes it a world beater.

personally i'd rather see him have a few yards, run up and put it in the net.

I've never seen someone so cool at takin penalties as our Mario

I hate to say it but his penalty technique reminds me of Cantona. In fact, come to think of it, there are many similarities, and he could well go on to be as big a legend here as Cantona is at OT.

Fantastic technique, he makes the keeper commit and simply passes it into the other side.. keepers have to shift their body weight to the side they are gonna dive or else they won't get anywhere near the ball.
Best pen taker I've ever seen and I can't ever see him missing one.

-- Thu Nov 03, 2011 8:56 pm --

If he's put them all to the left its cos the keepers have all dived to the right.. just coincidence.

we shall see

Absolute master at pens, I thought Elano was good but Balo makes it look easy.

I've never been so relaxed at knowing full well it would hit the back of the net.

If a keeper chooses not to commit early then it will go in just as easy and the keeper looks a complete tit, it takes supreme skill to take then the way Balo does - fortunately he has buckets of it.

edit.....it beats the hell out of Carlos taking them, seeing as he was one of the worst I've seen.

Friends n I have been discussing the likeness with Cantona since last season

His ability has never been in doubt the only question was whether the penny would drop at an earlier age than Cantona and whether we would benefit and see him reach world class status whilst at our club.

Personally believe he has more vision than any other player on our books just needs to up his completion rate.

There is alot of gamesmanship in Penalty's, the run up, angle of the run up more often than not can give away which side the ball will be kicked, with a short run up you give away less signs, and with the Balo-Bovvered look on his face he has the ultimate poker face,
It wouldnt surprise me if he could score 9 out of 10 blindfolded.

watched a close up replay today on press pass he was actually lookin to the keepers right on his build up trott. keeper fell for it hook, line n sinker

Yes but had the keeper gone to his left, would Balo have still sent it left? My belief is he would not, he would have stuck it in the other side. He seems to be able to just place the ball wherever the keeper isn't. Brilliant.

By the way, there were a load of rags on Red Cafe saying how much he reminds them of Cantona. Nearly everyone over there thinks he's fantastic. As they do of Silva, Yaya, de Jong, Aguero and half of our team :-)

Not only is he class at penalties but what about his "Nutmegs".
The one to win the pen was class...
