Band names: Origins and Meanings

There's variations on the story but Led Zeppelin's name supposedly came about from a comment by Keith Moon, who claimed that a supergroup Page was trying to put together would go down like a lead balloon. That band involving Jeff Beck and John Entwistle never happened but Page took inspiration from it for the New Yardbirds...

Fleetwood Mac......When Mick Fleetwood bought a Big Mac

The band was originally founded by Peter Green who, for some reason, didn't want his own name in the name of the band and called it Fleetwood Mac after Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. That didn't stop the band being universally referred to as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac until Green left.

Soft Machine were named after William S. Burroughs' novel of the same name. In the novel the term soft machine was used to describe the human body and its innate fragility and vulnerability.

Depeche Mode - Named after a French fashion magazine.

Joy Division - Apparemtly not named after a collection of captured women, used as prostitutes for Nazi soldiers

Fontaines D.C. Fontane was a character in the Godfather. D.C for Dublin City as there was already a band called The Fontaines.

The Snivelling shits got their name by hoping in a time machine, going forward to 2020 and reading the matchday thread on Bluemoon.

Van Halen - were called Mammoth but when lead singer David Lee Roth joined he said they should change the name and use the brothers' surname. Very smart boy Mr Roth.

Isn't Wolfgang Van Halen, using the Mammoth name now.
