I didn't realise the tactic of:

"When Messi gets the ball, 3 players close him down very quickly"

Is rocket science, maybe I'm mistaken

If you have 3 players paying such close attention to 1 player in a defensive capacity, you have to make sure that the other defenders are strong enough to handle one on one situations with the other top class players from Barca who can hurt you.

I'm not convinced that a back four of Sagna, Silvestre, Vermaelen, Clichy could do anywhere near the kind of marking job that Maicon, Lucio, Samuel, and Zanetti would do on the Barca forward line.

So tactics? Nah...more to do with the players Messi faced, their experience, and their ability as defenders.
