Not being an expert on Spanish contract law (not yet, anyway), but I'd assume the terms of the previous deal come into play (they're only arguing the contract extension is invalid). His original contract ran until 2024, so that MAY still be in play.Barca are now trying to say the contract renewal for deJong made by the previous board was corrupt and illegal and they are filing criminal charges. If, IF they were to succeed they wouldn't have to pay the money they owe him but surely it means he no longer has a contract so could sign for Chelsea on a free.
Have they thought this through?
If that's the case, then other players who signed contracts in that time may be able to use the precedent set the revert to previous deals, and if their previous deal had already expired, they could get out.
