Basel (H) Post Match Thread

I enjoyed the first half.Just went through the motions second half.
Good rest for our star players before a bigger game on Monday.

I would love to know what Pep said to the players before the match as there was so little urgency, for all the moaning it may be that Pep has said to the team to go out retain possession not to worry about anything other than getting through to the next round without any injuries or suspensions. How would we feel if we had gone at it 100% tonight and say Sane pulled a hammy and Jesus and Bernardo picked up injuries.

I found it quite telling that none of our big hitters on the bench were called for as there was no need, in the cold light of day tonight was a success and we achieved our objective.

Into the next round, no injuries, no suspensions, we have managed to give much needed breaks to Aguero, KDB, Otto and Silva while giving valuable minutes to Foden, Diaz and Stones.

We go again on Monday with pretty much a full strength squad and then have a nice break before we play again.

The big picture is what counts.
+1 from me.
Wasn't pretty - but other than Foden giving it a good go the rest looked like they were playing at 50% (although with Yaya now it's difficult to tell - hope we have a back room position for him next season though)

If your best player criteria is mazy runs to nowhere in particular with no final ball, you are absolutely correct.

Yes, he looks like the COULD be a player, as does Foden, as does Tosin, as does Zinchenko, as does Stones, as does Laporte, as does Jesus, as does Sané, as does Sterling. Not bad for a bunch of kids, in football terms!

He is full of vim and Igor in his cameos. One wonders if he can keep up the speed and rhythm for 90 minutes against men. Maybe we will get to see in the last games of the season?

I really hope that’s vigour, but each to his own. ;-)

I expect a bit of pride in the shirt , its not too much to ask.

You thought they played with no pride tonight?

I thought it was a 2nd/3rd eleven playing in 2nd gear with some first team players not wanting to get injured, others getting some much needed minutes in the legs and others like Foden and Diaz running their arses off and gaining a lot of experience.

This was a tie we needed to win and we did it 2 weeks ago.

Tonight was a training exercise for all intent and purpose.

You might not like it or agree with it but that football at this level but to suggest there was no pride in the shirt is well, pure hyperbole imo.

It's like dozens of blues waiting months to complain and tonight is their night.

Enjoy yourselves you won't have many opportunities going forward.

It's a place for opinions. Fuck it lets all lie and say how well we played shall we.

Gonna disagree, went walkabouts for the first goal, was lazy in the block for the second goal & first 10 minutes looked like he couldn't kick a football. His passing improved, but defending was lacklustre & he had parts to play in both opposition goals.

Stones seems to get grief, but he was the better of the 2 tonight even if he looked nervous throughout.

Definitely not.

Good to run out some of the youngsters.

That side was never going to roll a side like Basel.

Only fourth defeat all season and again like it was in the last of the group matches the side was no where near the standard required to win a game against the best the opposition can muster.

Pep picked a side that was going to struggle to win and so it proved.

At least he was trying to create something when he came on. He was one of a very few players that actually looked like he didn't want to lose
They were playing the way they were taught and were not chasing the game. This is the CL and it is a two legged affair. We were winning comfortably and were keeping the ball, as much as possible. Shocker.

Now, would I like to see us attack like a Panzer division every time we get the ball? Absolutely! However, I know enough to know that with the players on the field, against a not shit Basel side, that would have been suicidal. Pep MANAGED to the team into the QFs. Now, back to the Premier League with a full squad of fit players, with every sub getting a solid 90 minutes in their legs, and awaiting Roma in the QFs. (It is written in the Stars that’s Liverpool get Juve, isn’t it?)

Positives: Diaz looks superb every time I see him. Foden got game time, really needs to bulk up, eat kebabs or something. Sane tried at least. Jesus got minutes. That's it.
Negatives (If allowed on here): booing by City fans in cb stand, f*ck off the lot of you you spoiled gits. Yaya utterly finished as a footballer. Zinch very poor, Danillio very very poor, Gundogan very poor. Some senior players wanting to stake a claim for first team action messed up big time.
Home run of unbeaten games over, that's annoying and unnecessary against a shite team.

Main aim, we're through. Bring on the filth please.(they'll scrape past seville)
Added bonus: the Harry Kane team fail yet again aha ha.

Zinchenko, Touré, Danilo, Stones, Laporte.

I will never be arrogant enough to demand wins from our team, but I do not like the negativity and laziness we saw from these five tonight. They should be desperate for a place in the first team but at no point did we look like we cared about winning. All of them constantly passing backwards.

That said, booing was uncalled for.

Foden is much better than he showed tonight but he at least gave us some effort so I can't be annoyed at him.

Think the problem is if we picked up injuries or suspensions before or during the quarter finals, bar sane and b.silva would any of the rest be able to come in and do a job looking at that backline for instance would have you worried if any of them had to fill in ...

A lot of the attendees only go to games where the cost is lower and they often get short changed with selections and performances like this.

Glad I gave it a swerve. Should have lumped on Basel at 12-1. Probably 40-1 when we scored.

Good experience for the younger ones and a game for Jesus but nothing else to rave about.

I was meant to go tonight, but I'm ill (thankfully...) Some fans may have paid up to £50 for that performance.

All this bollocks about not staking a claim. Pep didn't care about that result. He put Tosin on on 85 mins with Sergio and KDB on the bench. It was a pointless exercise. I'm a paying fan and I understand that.
