Bayern Munich (A) | Post Match Thread

I think City went through quite simply because we are a better, and certainly a more complete, side than Bayern. Last night we would have had to have messed up massively not to have gone through to the semis. Bayern's problem had been not having a centre forward, or anyone who seemed capable of putting the ball in the net, and they had central defenders who were shaky in the extreme and quite incapable of coping with our forwards, especially in pressing mode. Last night was the same. Their pace out wide caused us problems for sure but the final ball was either not good enough or it was dealt with by our defence. Bayern have had trouble scoring goals recently and we saw why: lots of possession, a number of shots, few real chances ... and no goals. In 180 + 10 mins of football no goals from open play and one only from a very dodgy penalty. I won't say it was easy or even comfortable but we were never going to lose and it was no surprise when we took the lead. Bayern did not lose because of a Bayern-must-not-be-allowed-to-lose-in-Munich penalty.
What appears evident to me is clubs have followed the Pep model not playing an out and out striker, Bayern are doing it , Chelsea also , and to a lesser degree so are united, thing is though that Pep has evolved that playing system to include an out and out striker now in our system , which was telling with Bernardos interview post match at the Bayern game, he said we have got used to another style of play now, just proves the point that Pep is a football genius, who stays one step in front tactically than any other manager on the planet.

Yeah it would be nice to really stick it to UEFA that way. The stance seems to be softening, whether that's because we've finally sent some warnings, or if time has healed the wounds I'm not sure. We'll still have the new money vs old elite if we make the final and play either Milan team.

We can't lose Bernie and Gundo in the same summer unless Bellingham does come and hits the ground running. Hopefully we can keep both and rotate Gundo a bit to give Bellingham time to settle. Perrone has looked good from the short glimpses we've had but too early to know whether he'll cut it. Phillips needs to drastically improve if he's going to provide any sort of cover for Rodri.
What I like about Perrone is he knew he was coming here to sit on the bench so he could be assessed, & he had other options where he'd be a first team player, but he said he was confident in his abilities & proving himself here holds no fear.

It's a similar attitude that Zinchenko displayed leading to a dream move to the Emirates. Bernardo & Gundog's futures are a worry, & thought of losing both this summer gives me the willies...

Hopefully the club have got us covered. We made a lot of changes last summer & I think that contributed to our shaky start.

This is why I'd rather see our midfield evolve regardless of us getting Bellingham or not, than us having a summer revolution. We've seen what too many changes too quickly has done to Chelsea...

Yup, our plans went out the window around the 30 minute mark, which is a testament to our adaptability & versatility.

However, as someone pointed out yesterday, if we had the type of LB Pep wants like Alphonso Davies, that wouldn't have happened.

It's small margins like this which have tripped us up in the past, but hopefully it will be addressed in the summer as Pep alluded to a few weeks back...
Just makes you wonder if Pep sees Ake as a CB for the future, with Laporte obviously leaving then just maybe we are after a LB and Ake has just made the LB position his own just for this season, Ake got tore a new arsehole at LB v Bayern, that was the most worrying thing about that game.

It's those small margins that matter as we found out after Walker went off injured in the second leg against Real last season, which turned the match.

Imagine having Walker & Alphonso Davies as our first choice full backs? Aké is a better CB than LB & that's where Pep preferred him until Cancelo had a collapse in form & we found out Gomez wasn't the solution.

We need to end our lack of specialist LB's. Pep's acknowledged this by missing out on Cucurella & stating he hopes to resolve the ongoing issue in the next transfer window.

I had Forest vs ManUre on in the background last weekend. As soon as the Rags went 0-2 up, I switched the telly over.

Subconsciously, I probably only left it on in the first place in the faint hope the Rags would lose.
That ain't subconscious Dribble, that is front and centre conscious thinking... and quite right too!
