The UEFA rules state that; If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings (in descending order): a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question; b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question; c) higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question; d) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question; e) if, after having applied criteria a) to d), teams still have an equal ranking, criteria a) to d) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria f) to h) apply; Look at point e). Goal difference in the group applies before GD between teams.

A 4-2 victory would have left us in second place on goal difference
Not at all sure about that.

Result: 2-4
Teams in question: City and Bayern, both on 15pts
a) 3pts each from the two head-to-head games
b) Both have 0 goal difference from the two head-to-head games
c) Both have scored 5 goals in the two head-to-head games
d) City top Bayern on away goals, 4 vs 3

It is not absolutely clear what "the teams in question" means. If it means all teams in the group, then a) is redundant. Or put another way, a) is the primary criterion for deciding ALL positions in the group and the above are the criteria for deciding all positions in the group

Superbly Summarised.

In short, Pellegrini didn't understand, however we had no certainty we'd have scored another even if we'd have tried. Also it would have been horrific if Aguero had come on and got injured.

What would have been really funny though would have been if we'd have got the 4th goal and neither ourselves or Bayern realised that we would win the group.

Bayern would have been defending like fuck, just kicking the ball away whilst we'd have still been attacking like our lives depended on it. Picture the scene at Full Time when reality would have kicked in for Bayern; it would have been akin to 11 Phil 'Gormless' Jones post Sunderland; Priceless!

No I don't think I summarised it at all well, as my later edit to that post said. The key phrase - the ambiguous phrase - is "from the group matches played among the teams in question".

b) could be interpreted as you and I, originally, did, or it could be rephrased and interpreted as "superior goal difference among the teams in question from the group matches played" - i.e. by looking at the group table. The ambiguity is around the use of the term "group matches" - either among the teams in question or for the whole group. I think Cameron needs to come out and clarify the rules. Or Gove.

I want to see us play a complete second string, even if it means us getting beat something ridiculous like 40-0, next weeks game against Arsenal is almost make or break.

I am expecting a battering anyway.

Oh ye of little faith.....................!!

fair play to you mate, from a bayern perspective what happened second half?

you lost control of the game

Ha ha, the face of Hoeness on 63 minutes. Must still be working on this years financial ethics lecture.

Totalfootball,

I am not suggesting Bayern didn't want to win just as we wanted to win, but at 2-0 up and then at 2-1 at half time it didn't look like we could win, because at that time they looked comfortable, but the Bayern that came out for the second half was not as committed, so were they confident of not losing by more than two goals, and therefor took their foot off the gas, because the City that played the second half didn't look that overpowering, as you would have expected them to have to be to come back and win 3-2.

I disagree. I do not believe that Bayern allowed us to win. They pressed very well in the first 20 minuts but after that they got tired of that. People don't understand that you need have a very high level of energy if you want to press for the whole game.

We managed to stop Bayern with clever tactics. And David Silva the genius completely outplayed the Bayern midfield.

Tbh i think Bayern knew that we would top the group if we had won 4-2. It was evident with the worried look on their faces and them subsituting their only striker with a midfielder. That muller was also time wasting 10mins from the end.

Imagine the reaction had Negredo nicked a fourth goal. The Bayern players would be burying their heads in the ground and the crowd shell shocked. while Negredo runs back to the centre circle with the ball. " whats wrong guys? We need another goal. Hurry up and restart the games you twats"
