I'm positive that, as has been reported, there was some intelligence that an attack was likely. I live in Berlin at the moment (around a kilometer west of where the attack took place) and the police presence has been huge over the last few days. Obviously, the amount of tourists here increases the number of police at this time of year, but it certainly seemed like there was a big increase in police on the streets compared to last year.

The atmosphere in the city, unsurprisingly, is awful this morning.

Went to Berlin last year, lovely city with a tremendous history. It is disgusting what has happened but unfortunately it is all too easy to nick a truck and drive it into a concentration of people. Thankfully the type of person carrying out these attacks can be counted on your hand so we should not even bother to analyse or reference these actions as ideologically driven.

This was not a terrorist attack but just the disgusting, callous murder of innocent people carried out by a cowardly twat.

I honestly thought that with Berlin being such a culturally and religiously diverse city, it would make it a little less prone to horrible events like this. Shows my naivety. Horrible, indescriminate act.

yes, the guy found dead in the lorry was the original polish driver. Seemed to be hijacked

BBC says he died of "stab wounds",also says an aircraft hanger that houses 2000 migrants is being searched.

There are differing reports about the Polish lorry driver, who police have confirmed was found dead in the vehicle.

Polish TVN24 says the driver was 37 years old and died of stab wounds.

His cousin, Ariel Zurawski, told TVN24 the vehicle was hijacked as it travelled from Italy to Berlin carrying a consignment of steel girders. He said his cousin had to park the lorry in Berlin until Tuesday because of a delay in finishing the delivery.

However, police say they believe the lorry had been stolen from a construction site in Poland.

I'm no physiologist but, refugees, economic migrants etc must be very vulnerable to exploitation by those more intelligent i.e religious/ideological leaders. They come from, quiet frankly, shit holes, where violence and death is common place and freedom less so. Then they come to 'The West', where we have bright lights, big gatherings and generally people do what they want socially

I would be very interested to know what(if any) work is done with the to help them integrate into modern, civilized life

I am by no way excusing what people like this guy do, but I would like to know that if this aircraft hanger that houses 2000 migrants has any sort of out reach workers attached

I heard a security expert on 5Live saying it is 'impossible' to protect everyone. It is. However, can they not put up con create barriers around markets or places off main roads i.e Spinningfields to try and mitigate?
