BBC SPOTY | Team of the Year: CITY | Coach of the Year: GUARDIOLA | World Sport Star: HAALAND

The BBC - or rather the BBC’s appointed panel - determined that she was going to win it by choosing the six finalists that they did, and then providing near limitless publicity for their favourite. Beth Mead won it last year. Do you really think that women’s football is the nation’s favourite sport?

Had they put Erling into the final six, then he would have won it by a distance, and there’s no reason to exclude him from the list other than to ensure that he couldn’t win it.

errr- what I said - he has only been here a year - The recipient must either be British or reside and play a significant amount of their sport in the United Kingdom

YouGov reckon the English Women's team is a lot more popular with the public than the men's, and their final last year was the most watched sport event in the UK in 2023. It's not like Ben Stokes, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Frankie Dettori or Rory McIlroy aren't popular. There have also been plenty of male footballers going to the public vote in the last twenty years, yet only one winner during that time, and mostly they didn't even make the top 3.

There are plenty of arguments to be had around the popularity of women's football, but there isn't much disputing that these women are famous, and well liked.

The BBC in the piece about Pep winning and City team winning;

“In February, the Premier League charged City with 115 breaches of its financial rules following a four-year investigation.”

Nothing about United being fined in the Earps piece.

That’s why nobody gives a shite!
I'm sure the irony isn't lost on any Blues.
That statement has ZERO impact on these awards as the charges relate to a period that ended in 2018!!!!!!!!!!!
(Oh and we've yet to be found guilty)
But let's shoehorn it in there anyway.

Reminder we played in the FIFA World Club Cup this afternoon - a competition roundly rubbished on here for years on the basis that we were not in it
I did write a lengthy response to this but the thread was pulled for 5 minutes and I cannot be arsed re-writting it

you think she deserves it I think Johnson- thompson was a more worthy winner because she actually is a world champion

as I already said neither or our opinion matters as the results are in, Earps won it fair enough

They were my two favourites to win - I got a 1st and 3rd so I must have been in tune with the voting zeitgeist - I actually thought Dettori would win a sympathy vote - probably "retiring" then relocating to the States to carry on riding went against him

But he didn't qualify to go on that list

Thats the reason he was excluded.
Same reason as Katie Taylor, John Rahm and Djokovic are better sports stars than Mary Earps but don't meet the criteria either

The last set of published criteria I can find for the main award are for last year, and on that basis Haaland would qualify for the headline vote rather than World Sport Star.

If you’re not British, then you need to play a significant amount of your sport in the UK, your core achievements in a year need to have occurred in the UK and you need to be resident in the UK, so Haaland would satisfy all three.

If they’ve changed the criteria in the past year then I’d be interested in seeing it.
