Fergie didn't knock Liverpool off their perch, they jumped off it themselves. Having won their last Div 1 league championship in 1989-90, in the shadow that followed Heysel, the scouse self implosion started with Souness's time as manager. They thought they were royalty who deserved to sit on the throne and that it would just take a new manager and a season or two at the most to get back there - remind you of another club? - but it didn't work out that way. With a massive spend on transfers and wages and no strong contender that could pressure them season after season, the rags gained the dominance that they always thought they deserved until... What a glorious decade it has been. But a perch? That could only be as viewed from outside. Who of us has taken any of these trophies as granted?

He's not dumb, the Glazers have hardly said a word in the time they've been owners so he thinks this is the best way to win the fans over - it is. There does seem to be some long term vision, but it's copying other teams so lets see what that gets them. I'm assuming they are really just waiting out Pep to leave now that Klopp will go.
