Jonny Evans is better than Ben Gibson. I'm not sure people realise how much protection Gibson gets or certainly got last season playing under Karanka. I live in the Boro and and am surrounded by smoggies and have yet to speak to one who thinks he's good enough to play for a top 6 side. I've seen plenty of him myself and to me it's obvious to see he would struggle in a high line.

Its clear Evans is being bought for his leadership and experience. Gibson doesn't bring that to this side.

I'd genuinely rather we bought Evans if I was absolutely forced to choose but it's an absolute piss take considering the relative qualities of our CBs and our attackers and further considering the amount of money we are spending this window that we are seriously considering either of them. I genuinely think there is some very faulty thinking going on at the club on this.Ben Gibson anybody ?

That's my worry too. Going in deep for mbappe and Sanchez and scrapping the barrel with Jonny Evans. We spent a fortune on full backs, but they're quality additions to the team. It should be quality or don't sign anyone. I feel the same about the midfield too. I don't think there's a balance between defence and attack. Nzonzi would be a good signing.

On a pure numbers game, it is arguable that we need a striker and a CB (assuming Pep really doesn't want to consider Mangala), I accept that. But looking at the quality we have in those areas, in defence we have an injury prone Kompany and two average players whereas up front we have Aguero and Jesus. it is clear to me that if we need a striker, we only need a back up to what we have as Sergio and Jesus are top quality. Whereas at CB we are so utterly reliant on Kompany that IMO we need a top player there. People would think it was absurd if we bought VVD and compromised with an average chump like Troy Deeney as back up striker but buying Evans or Gibson is even more absurd IMO.That's my worry too. This is spot on. I actually made this thread and thought Gibson would be an okay signing, mainly because I knew we wasn't going to be signing someone class like van dijk. I think we will win the league, but I've still got my doubts with this squad.

Posts like this are so petty.
People need to get over the fact that Evans used to play for United. Not only is he a better player than Gibson, he would more than likely be cheaper as well.
