I know it sounds daft but I don’t think he can play with a winger (442/433).
I think for him to be as effective as he can be he has to be the winger/wing back i.e. Huddersfield

He played in a 442 with Lemar and had no issues in terms of offensive contribution and has no problem in that area for us. The difference was that at Monaco he had Bakayoko and Fabinho as CDM covering the the two CBs. Perhaps that is highlighting his defensive issues a lot more.

Yeah true. It’s rare Pep goes with 2 CDM’s though.

I'm absolutely baffled by this thread. (take the condescending tone as tongue in cheek) You guys are aware of a term called totality right? To break it down there's two sides. A defensive side and an offensive side. Equally important, right? Absolutely not and it's not even close but I'll spare you the lengthy reasoning behind that but just trust me on that one. I'll give you two options here and you tell me who you'd take. Player 1 is rated a 7 defensively and a 2 offensively. Player 2 is a 4 defensively but a 9 offensively. It's simple math for one thing. Secondly as I've pointed out above offensive contribution is massively more valuable than defensive contribution and we have arguably the best attacking fullback in world football....

Obviously 1 is Delph and 2 is Mendy. You guys are expecting Mendy to be the perfect player and I'm sorry that's just not possible. This game is about scoring goals and he'll probably create more chances than other LB in any of the big leagues and probably be a large margin. We'll be hiding him often in a 3-5-2 this year anyway so wake up.
Stopped reading at “math”

Mendy I thought was stuck where he was because there was no one else in the center of defense. I was blaming Kyle for being missing.

But Mendy was at fault imo for being very static for long periods. I think he can do a lot better. But so could quite a few in our last few games.
‘Centre of defence’

Fucking Yanks

Do we? In the 4 games so far, he’s looked awesome in the 2 where he had yards of space to gallop into and deliver those brutal crosses (something he is unquestionably the best in the business at), but distinctly less so against the parked buses Wolves and Newcastle served up. Were it not for the fact that there’s currently obviously an issue with Sane, I would have far preferred to see his rapier like talents deployed yesterday, with Delph behind him, rather than Mendy. There’s only a point to having a bulldozing left back with a fantastic line in crosses in the team, if the opposition gives you the freedom to deploy that weapon

Good post.

Just to add to that, the team didn't seem to struggle for goals last season with delph and zinchencko playing as fullbacks who came inside to the middle to offer support when the team attacked and rarely ever overlapping. They left the attacking to the quality wingers and midfielders ahead of them and it didn't stop the team scoring and breaking the goals record. But more importantly the team could win the ball back quickly and stop counters as well as retain possession.

Yep, agree completely
