Benjamin Mendy (Back In Training)

A lot of hype on here about Mendy. he has clearly increased his value whilst injured. We saw him play for us in 3 and a bit games, none of which he set alight. He needs to be brought back slowly to give him chance to get used to the Premier League otherwise 5 games in he will be being slaughtered on here.

Mendy isn't particularly good defensively though tbf and I'd be very surprised if Mendy is notably better. He's an attacking FB first and foremost.

I'd agree with this. I'd say Delph is a bit better purely as a defender but Mendy offers us so much more going forward.

It's what we do best, to be fair.

Some for us watch 'soccer' outside of the UK, brah!!

As we have seen with Walker on the other side, playing with wingers actually inhibits our full backs and it will be the same for Mendy.

We did see glimpses where there can be no spaces to run beyond because Sane or Sterling occupy the same spaces.

We have started to see Sane move into an old-fashioned inside left role in recent games, and who can forget the goal against Liverpool also when he went for a return and Mendy whipped it back from the by-line.

All the same, Delph does gives us more of a balance when it comes to staying back and becoming essentially a five in the middle.

The only way we will see the very best of Mendy and Walker's talents would be to go three at the back and essentially do away with our wingers, which ain't gonna happen.

Until we see how Mendy's short passing measures up, it is difficult to say beyond his incredible power and pace, how much further he will now elevates us.

For me, Delph would be City's player of the year at any other time.

Could have been the difference in the title race early on.

Another solution is inverting Sane and Sterling once Mendy returns. Allow Mendy and Walker to provide the width - with Sane and Sterling cutting in when we are in the final 3rd - isnt this what Pep did at Bayern with Robben and Co.? Put Sane and Sterling's shooting boots on the inside. I'm telling you, if all these dicing runs we are seeing from Sane were coming from the right instead of the left, his left foot would be pouring goals in.

It will be interesting to see if Pep switches back to 3-5-2 again once Mendy is fit to play. We have 4 central defenders who are all fit and Aguero with Jesus.

Could definitely be a possibility; however, he didn't really have a choice with Robben as he is extremely one-footed.

When he returns and we all hope it is soon, he could be instrumental for us in our campaign. What a wonderful character he has been for us in our adventure so far, imagine him on the pitch for us he'd be stupendous!

he'll be instrumental for us in the Champions League (Zinc & Delph wont cut it in the latter stages)

Leagues wrapped up, with our squad players nicely coached & moulded to their positions

I really can't see a team that uses both Sane and Mendy unless Mendy plays on the left of a three.

You think Guardiola spent £53 million on a left back - the only left back in the squad - that can't be played with his only left winger? (and one of his most promising players). 433 is clearly our preferred formation, but we're supposed to think Pep decided we didn't need a left back in that formation?

Or is it that you think Pep built a squad with Sané and Sterling as integral parts of it, while pursuing another winger in Sanchez/Mahrez, only to play a 352 system with no wingers at all?

Sometimes I wonder if people just think no thought goes into building the squad at all.

Have you had too many tinnies of XXXX mate? Delph has been superb at LB this season, and the only way he "won't cut it" is because he is out injured. He has made very few mistakes this season and has linked up well going forward. And I can't really fault Zinchenko, even though it looks like he's not cut out to play LB. If it wasn't for these two, Pep would of had no choice in buying an established LB in January.

I have no doubt on the ability of Delph whatsoever.

They can both play in the same team. When Mendy comes forward, Sane will most probably come inside in an old fashioned inside left position, resulting in more goals scored IMO.

Ok, tell me your team?

Your team?
Same as we are now with Mendy replacing Delph in a back 4. 3 at the back means Walker and Mendy plus one CB. Pep will not keep the other 3CBs(4 including Adarabioyo) happy for long who aren't starting. I should imagine he has quite a few headaches now keeping two out of the starting 11.
