Not too sure about that Barca spent just last summer €70m on shit like Alcacer and Gomes combined.
Again, like I've pointed out many times on many threads, attacking players simply cost more than defensive players. This is just a fact.

Top 20 most expensive transfer ever includes 2 defenders. John Stones and Big Hair. Everyone else is an attacking player. There is a reason why this is the case.

So Alcacer and Gomes at 30 and 35 million Euros puts them at around the middle range transfer prices for attacking players. 50 million puts Mendy at what? #3 or #4 of all time? Do folks really think Mendy is he next Dani Alves?

Yes, that's amazing value. A game changer at 43 million is fantastic business.

A role player at 50 million is meh!

A role player?

Who says he's a role player? You?? Pep certainly doesn't think of his fullbacks that way, they're among the most important players on the pitch in the modern game and anyone who's seen us for the last year should know that.

He's already one of the 5 or 6 best players in his position, he's 22 and got the potential to be much better.

Fixing any spot in the stariting XI with a player who can be one of the best in his position over the next 10 years is worth £40m every day.

€80m on Suarez, €90m on Neymar.
Yes, lets compare the price of the best Striker and 2nd best wide forward in the world to a leftback.

No one blinks at excessive prices for the absolute best in the game because there simply aren't many comparable you can get. But a leftback?

The rags have destroyed the transfer market with Martial & Pogba & are possibly going to do it again so all transfers are stupid now & the Luiz deal was the same it will spin off onto defenders. Young players are going for stupid money. Stones wasn't worth half of what we paid for him.

No point in worrying about it. Silva we did well on & Sané plus Jesus look bargains now but we will get our arses spanked somewhere along the line.

Luke Shaw was £30m and that was 3 years ago.

Yeah I agree it's silly money for a fullback and I'll be disappointed if we pay it. However, every man and his dog knows we're desperate for fullbacks and that weakens our hand in negotiations.

@Dax777 , you talk about 3rd or 4th highest transfer of all time... you know about inflation right?

In many years, but sooner than most think, a below average player will cost 50m.

And besides, Mendy will go for less than Bernardo.

As TV money/investment grows each season, so does the market for top players....dont think we can compare prices of players in the past. Even in the last couple of years, prices have jumped. Whether we like it or not the market seems to be set at £30-40mil for the top defenders. Even if the rumoured 50mil (euros) is correct (£43mil), thats seems to be the going rate now......The prices getting throw about for Mbappe (100mil) will soon be the norm for top 5 strikers in the world.....

Price means very little to me perosnally, not my money and a player is worth what the buying club is willing to pay.....in this case 50mil euros!; ) We cant forget Mendy is 22years old so, if the club is willing to pay that amount, its not just about the talent of the player today but when buying a young lad, its about what the club feel his potential will be over the next 4-5 years.....
