You speak of attacker being game changers (seemingly in isolation to defenders) but perhaps in the positional game, the movement of defenders is more important than before in setting things up for attackers? A bit like attackers are a boxers hands that strike but without the correct movement of the feet (defenders) then the ability and effectiveness of the punches is much reduced...

You are probably right. My definition of game changer vis a vis role player probably heavily towards attacking players for the former and defensive players for the latter. And it might be a flawed view of football. But the market supports that view. Hence why defenders are almost never top end money transferred.
