Bernardo Silva tweet controversy

This story will be running long after Liverpool hacking story is dead, that is what i take seriously, i don't think its a subject that should be joked about, it just adds to the shit storm and noise

It was still a joke and lightened the mood of a way OTT thread, relax mate. Didn't seem to affect Bernardo or Benjamin tonight did it.

Guardiola on Silva tweet, “He speaks 4/5 languages & that is the best way to understand how open-minded he is.

The image is not about the colour of the skin. He took a picture of Benjamin when he was young & he related it to this cartoon, which was quite similar for the image”

No one is, as far as I can tell. A high profile footballer reinforcing negative stereotypes isn’t a good thing and will (probably rightly) get criticised

Private messages should be kept private. Twitter is not a private platform, it is a way to broadcast to the world. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that black kids at school got a bit of grief and where themselves compared to that cartoon character on the strength of one of the world last best footballers putting that out there

It’s not the crime of the century. It’s daft, insensitive and was bound to draw criticism
Yes, all of this. Ironically the people getting most upset about this all seem to be on the other side of the issue, absolutely losing their minds over snowflakes and PC whatnot. Most people in here who aren't stridently defending the right to post racist cartoons don't seem all that bothered.

Bernardo should tweet out that he's sorry, it was an out of context joke, and everyone would move on and forget about it twenty minutes later.

I honestly think the only thing he can do now I tweet a Young KDB and the white chocolate cartoon

KDB or Zinchenko?

I should probably stay out of this one for the most part but I can't resist to say this.

I'll say he made what I would say is an uneducated, even if not intentionally poor decision.

Banning him is madness as it isn't going to address anything and only fuel the hatred of those concerned about what he did (which doesn't mean I can't empathise with him or others who make similar errors in judgement).

"Re-educating" him doesn't have to mean brainwashing, it means a conversation should happen where maybe as someone I genuinely think is a good lad will listen and also be open to sharing his own thoughts so he does not feel silenced. His saying it was just a joke I get, and is a usual way to defend such mistakes at first, but I hope he is willing to see that basically this sheet is just not cool for good reason. I am no thought police officer either, as he is entitled to think and feel what he wants. That also doesn't mean it has no impact.

I'd NEVER post a joke like he did. That makes me a snowflake? No, it comes from my own awareness of the awful history of blackface and racism on all of us. You think you should be able to litter in public because no one should tell you what to do and you don't want to walk over to the rubbish bin as it's too far? That's how I see such arguments. It's not doing us any good.

He may be the nicest lad on Earth. I suspect he is a good guy. That also doesn't mean he can't do something harmful or make mistakes. We are all capable of that even when we don't mean it or want to. Others can learn to get "thicker skins" but it's not about that as much as some think. It's about accepting responsibility for mistakes. I thought that was important? We all make them. Don't hide and deflect. That ish is weak.

We can recognise his own background may have led him to not realise what he was doing, and even if Mendy didn't care it also doesn't mean that this is harmless or about being PC.

Blackface is not something I would ignore as something having impact on human lives. He may have not meant it, but if you knew what it meant I'd hope you might think twice or even better not want to contribute.

That's how the best and most respectful human beings behave and what anyone who works with children knows is what we try to instill in them from day 1.

I don’t think it’s any different then aguero being sad to look like the KUn character. If they were not best mates or something I guess I could see it but it was just banter between friends. They always joke online. People trying to make something out of nothing.

I get that, but at some point we have to stop looking for racial undertones in absolutely everything, and just treat each other equally. It was a funny joke meant for Mendy, and no one else should feel the right to be offended on Mendys behalf
Spot on pal.

If all who are outraged and offended could open their tiny bigoted minds and see it was a just a 'joke' shared between two best mates in light hearted banter, the world would be a better place.

Sadly it was perhaps a tad insensitive for many melts in today's PC society.

Now let's talk about Mendy and Bernardo for the right reasons, and those reasons are footballing reasons only. Or should be...

Totally agree with the 2 posts above. If I was Pep I would put a blanket ban on the players talking to the outside media after games, they can only give interviews with City TV.

This would create a siege mentally and help the team bond even stronger away from distractions.

Pretty sure he'll get a ban, Mario got a match for the Super Mario Brothers tweet.

Pep is a racist will be this year's Pep is a fraud/Pep is a drug cheat.

Unfair, but we haven't helped ourselves here.

Life will go on.

I’m sorry for the people and organisations that fight racism and rightly do so. But if we consider Bernardo’s tweet to be an act of racism than something has gone very wrong and it will definitely not help fighting racism where it should be. If you can’t see that you will have as big a problem as the people who actually are racists. For me Bernardo isn’t one of them based on his tweet to Mendy. Nor is anyone tweeting something similar to a friend despite any colour of skin.
If we take the fight against racism out of context we will never solve the problem. Nor should we ignore it when it actually IS an act of racism. This, no matter how you look at it, simply is not.

I disagree, think Bernardo will get a warning regarding future twitter messages, and he will be told he has to attend some Kick IT out programme, but he wont get a ban.
