Release clause is a shame but it may help us with planning if for instance it is very clear that the clause can only be triggered within say a week of the season ending so clubs have to put up or shut up and we can get on with our business.

Does anyone know anything about this supposed release clause?

Got to say that feels like a bit of a kick in the plums. I had visions of 2, or even 3, more years at City and then a freebie to see out his days with his ‘beloved’ Benfica, but given that the record fee they’ve ever paid for a player was circa £38m for a 21 year old Enzo Fernandez, they clearly aren’t likely to stump up £47m for a 30 year old Bernie next summer. Given that release clause would have been inserted surely at his behest, it suggests that those grasping twats at the Nou Camp were his objet d’amour all along.
Like Ahsan says, smacks of a load more wonga and a swift exit rather than any genuine recommitment to City.

He's 30 next summer and getting 47 million for him combined with the fact he doesn't particularly want to stay at City isn't a bad deal. We get a final year from him which would of been a disaster considering if he'd left and he gets his move next summer for a decent fee for a 30 yo.

£47m into the Wirtz fund maybe as well?

That's how I'm looking at it... Who's to say there will be a buyer for him next year as well? Even if there is, hopefully, Paqueta's situation will be resolved and we can go back for him.

We've had his best years and he's still at his peak, 47m for a 30 yr old is fair enough and is reward for not throwing his toys around. This is great news, whoever we sign won't be as good as Bernie and we have another year to plan a replacement.

Considering that release clause quoted is getting back our £42m we paid for him.Am happy with that and it puts the end to old players wanting to leave. The squad will be full of young lads except for Kevin who we know might retire here.
