Another shout for mpenza!
I could be wrong but I think I remember reading that kiki was predominantly a central midfielder at his previous clubs but he could do a job on the left side. Unlike anyone we had at the time.kiki wasn’t bad, I think the hair and the Dutch total footballing background may have raised our expectations a bit. I know it was the case for me anyway. He could play a bit, and he did have great hair! I preferred him on the left to Riera who couldn’t run. Think I remember Kiki playing through the centre a couple a times as well?

Its funny that you mentioned riera, because didn't he come the following January?
Which would of meant that we had 2 off seasons where we were unable to bring in a left sided midfielder.
I shudder at the thought of what we would of become if it wasn't for the takeover.
Your right, within a couple of seasons we had seen the likes of samaras, corradi, mpenza, the return of dickov, cole, vassell, anymore?yeah I think he was the following window. And tiers came with such promise too. The left back rot of not bein gym able to sign a decent one in his prime was starting to spread through the rest of the team. We went through a lot of strikers in that era too
He actually did have some good cameos of the bench. Didn't mind him as an impact player at all.Say it quietly but Adam Johnson?

We were so skint that signing samaras 6m for samaras was something to get excited about.
What sums that era up for me was when Stuart Pearce brang steve Wigley in as an assistant coach and said that was his most important signing of the summer.
