Best City Debuts

Eyal Berkovic v Watford at Maine Rd. Keegan's first game in charge.
Benarbia is the only answer so may as well close the thread.
Seem to remember Eyal made his debut just before Benarbia. I thought Berkovic was brilliant only to be bettered by Ali shortly afterwards. Benarbia will always be one of my favourite players. His assist to the goat at Gillingham (?) was unreal.

Rodney v Chelsea won 1-0 no sign of fucking the league up little did we know
One of the best days in the one season standing in the North Stand
Gasps all around when the fat bastard waddled out of the tunnel
Oh Rodney Rodney…………
You can stick your Ian Moore up your fuckin arse

It looked like he had lol

Keith Curle Coventry away 1991. Never kept a clean sheet away from home in the league, the year before. Great day, glorious sunshine, Quinny looping header and Curle organising the defence like he had been at City 10 years.
Mint.
1st day of the season and we brought thousands to Highfield road Coventry Our away support that day was mental .loud and vociferous.
We had the most expensive centre back in the world in our defence, the fastest left back in the world at no.3( or was it dissa...?) probably the tallest centre forward in the land at no.9,Peter Reid ,the old general in central midfield, smashing into tackles, and not forgetting tricky tricky Ricky Holden on the wing slinging in high balls for Quinn from the left side. I loved that team and era.away games were mental!

Ian thompstone !
I was at that match and remember being shocked how barren Middelsborogh was, just looked a nothing place. Stuart Ripley and " slaver slaven" as he was known up there are two names from the past.
Noticed the " Stewart must stay! " banner in the away end.
He didn't....

Got to mention Niall Quinn's debut for us against........Chelsea..
Midweek night match at Maine Road, under the floodlights. I was on the Kippax and watched this tall gangly centre forward neatly chest control a long ball, and make a simple short pass to the left wing, before sprinting into the box, just in time to arrive at the far post to steer a towering header from the cross ,into the Platt Lane goal., right in front of the Chelsea fans.
What a way to announce yourself to the Kippax !

Another great day at Coventry when we took thousands was Sammy Macs and he scored a screamer

Yeah backheel, Sheff Wed away stands out as well for Ali, we won 6-2 i am sure he scored a goal or two and assisted most of the others.

Random one that always sticks in my mind. Daniel van Buyten. It was clear when he shouted and touched the ball he was head and shoulders above anything we’d had at that time. Pity it didn’t work out in the end but I remember watching that debut thinking he was some defender.

The obvious one though is Aguero. Me and the then Mrs Langley were in The Nags Head in town watching that. Fucking incredible debut and whilst I didn’t think he’d end up doing what he did, I knew there and then he was going to be one of the best we’ve ever had. Not bad for a player who was using us as a stepping stone, if you believed the rags back then.

Intresting fact ; Sammy macs utd league debut was as a 17 year old against us at old Trafford, a 3-3 draw,in front of 63k
Don't ask me how I retained that useless stat in my head, prob read it on the back of the old football player cards in the 70s!

I’m not sure it was all downhill from there mate, we were top of the league at the turn of the year after beating Liverpool at Anfield.

Yeah, I was a bit dramatic there maybe. Remember the Liverpool game very well. My first trip to Anfield and first win. Didn’t suppose that 43 years later I’d still be waiting for the second one. Missed the Anelka one due to an incident in Liverpool before the game.

Didn’t realise we were top of the league either. We’d lost six times by then.

Seem to remember about half the team having brilliant debuts at West Ham under Sven. In fact thinking about it, it was kind of his debut for City that day too!

I was there too - not a big following that day - got chased by Boro after game - very relieved finding the car and fucking off.

I remember going to QPR away and think we won 4-2 and it was Uwe's debut I think and he scored 2

However I am old and might be imagining it if someone can confirm?
