American punk has always been superior IMO.
 
Punk and new wave is a massive spectrum. I think US punk stayed much the same for longer than UK punk which was quickly commercialised by McLaren's publicity excesses.

My favourite era followed on from the initial raw punk wave and love The Ramones, Stranglers, Clash, Buzzcocks, Rats, Undertones and many more.
