Best Live Bands?

The trouble is that you need to have seen them at their best. I've seen the Who several times, and while they are still an outstandingly good live act, they're not even close to the incendiary band they were 50 years ago, and it's hardly surprising. But you need to be 60+ to have a vague chance of having seen them, or their contemporaries, at their very best, you can only really go on footage or live albums (at least those that were actually live, not re-recorded in a studio - Led Zeppelin, I'm looking at you) which isn't quite the same.

I will say that Coldplay astounded me. Free ticket, no real desire to go and see them, but bloody hell they were excellent.

Over the last 10 years you will struggle to attend a better gig that Coldplay

Slade the best I have seen live.
The last 15 years.
Ryan Adams with Cardinals, solo and new group last year.
Drive By Truckers great every time I have seen them.
Lift to Experience brilliant show last year.
Josh T Pearson solo at Stereo Glasgow 2011.
Lucinda Williams World Without Tears show.
Neil Young Edinburgh Playhouse 2008 and Hyde Park 2009.

I've seen Ride on 3 occasions in the last 3 years and they seem to be getting better and better.

The Roses at Finsbury Park in 2013 were excellent. Rag infestation in the crowd was depressingly inevitable and conspicuous by its absence in Manchester 12 months before.

The Las in 2005 was a masterclass in song writing.

Stereophonics were the first band I ever saw live back in '97. I've only seen a few others since then but Phonics remain the best I have ever seen live and if anything I am still enjoying their shows more every time I go and see them. Think I might be a big fan..

The very best acts I have seen live:
1st Kate Bush, Eventim (Hammersmith) Apollo September 24th 2014 By a country mile the most special live event i have seen.
2nd Led Zeppelin, Kings Theatre Edinburgh, January 28th 1973
3rd Yes, multiple times in Edinburgh and Glasgow from Dec 73 - March 2017

TBF I have seen very few poor concerts. Rod Stewart at the SECC was not my cup of tea. I blame alcohol/drugs/youth on not particularly enjoying Pink Floyd at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh in December 1974. The Who were well past their best when I saw them a couple of years ago. Peter Gabriel who is a special hero of mine was pretty soulless at the SE Hydro.

I have special memories of the following live acts

Diana Krall at the RAH a couple of times
Noel Gallagher HFB a couple of times, one at the Hydro one in Edinburgh Castle
Genesis, Usher Hall in 1973 doing Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
REM at Murrayfield and then again at Sirling Castle
The Stones at Murrayfield this year were just fantastic full stop. Never mind their ages - they were simply superb.
Australian Pink Floyd are a very good live act. - seen them a couple of times
Steve Hackett is just a complete genius and is worth going to see whenever he tours
Deacon Blue when they are on it are a brilliant live band
Tom Jones at Edinburgh Castle was sheer class and had one of the best bands with him.
Robert Plant and Alison Kraus at the Grand Rex in Paris in May 2008 were supported by a band lead by T Bone Burnett. They were unbelievably good.
Brian Wilson doing Pet Sounds was emotional in a good way

Alex Harvey, Hawkwind, Wishbone Ash were all good in the 70's but for whatever reason my recollection of the detail is a little lost.

I regret I never saw the Who in their pomp and I would have loved to have seen the Doors at their best.

David Lee Roth Wembley Arena 1988 can't sing now could just about hold a tune then but what a showman and seeing Steve Vai and Diamond Dave on stage together on my 18th what a privilege

Red Hot Chili Peppers London Astoria 1990 great gig and got a hand job from a fine looking lady
