Best music decade

Erm? Ok you're wrong! But I would like to know why you think that.

The actual film (celluloid) used to record the movies had a real distinctive look for me, noticeable even when you watch those films now.
It was a time when the stars of the era still looked cool, and look cool now (have a look at St Elmo's Fire to see how things panned out...); they were genuine movie stars (Eastwood), but it was the start of a new breed of actors who brought a realism and authenticity to their roles - Pacino, Streep, DeNiro.

I also really like the political, conspiracy movies of the era personally along with the big box office stuff.

Great directors too, in an era before special effects were first of all clunky (80's) and then overly dominant/CGI (90s-00s)

Anyway, in no particular order (and not counting Luke Skywalker's mob):
- Parallax View, Chinatown, The Exorcist, All The Presidents Men, Rollerball, Vanishing Point, French Coonection I and II,
Jaws, Deliverance, Godfathers, Cuckoo's Nest, Carrie, Saturday Night Fever, Warriors, Manhattan , Annie Hall, Alien, Apocalypse, Deer Hunter, Dirty Harry and first 2 sequels, China Syndrome, Capricorn One, Serpico, Day of the Jackal, Westworld, Assault on Precinct 13 & other Carpenter films, Grease, Silver Streak, Close Encounters, Taxi driver - oh and the best Bond films too.

Best reply, now that's what I'm talking about.

It's an era think I think to be honest.

My favs are

The Shawshank Redemption
Pulp Fiction
Schindlers List
Goodfellas
The Green Mile
12 Years a Slave

If the "best decade" is defined as any 10-year period, then 1965-1975 is the greatest 10-year period in music history. Here are 20 of the greatest albums from that era:

Rubber Soul ('65)
Revolver ('66)
Sgt. Pepper's ('67)
The Beatles ('68)
Abbey Road ('69)
Beggars Banquet ('68)
Exile on Main Street ('72)
Blonde on Blonde ('66)
What's Going On ('71)
Who's Next ('71)
Astral Weeks ('68)
Moondance ('70)
Pet Sounds ('66)
Are You Experienced? ('67)
Dark Side of the Moon ('73)
Born to Run ('75)
Led Zeppelin ('69)
Led Zeppelin [IV] ('71)
Talking Book ('72)
Innervisions ('73)

An unparalleled decade of excellence and creativity. The 80s and 90s had some great artists and music, but with just a very few exceptions, that's where it ends for me. We are unfortunately in permanent, irreversible decline and most modern popular music is shit.

1790-1800 Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Franz Schubert were at their peak

modern era 63-73

Have this debate with Mrs G every so often.

She is a big fan of Eighties music whereas I'm a 70's man myself.

When you look through the different and eclectic mix of music that the 1970's produced I don't think there has been a decade to match it.

Though to be fair I stopped listening after 1983.

Age
70-80 = 1955 - 1965
60-70 = 1965 - 1975
50-60 = 1975 - 1985
40-50 = 1985 - 1995
30-40 = 1995 - 2005
20-30 = 2005 - 2015

Check your age, that should be you preferred music era as this tends to be the best part of your life, first real relationship, first lads/girls holiday, passing your driving test, becoming a adult, your first home etc....life seems exciting as everything seems fresh so your on top of life and live it to the max. you hear songs from that era you immediately remember something that makes you smile.

Anything older will be you memories from family life dad, mum etc so you can relate to it.

anything newer it just won't have the same affect as you feel music was so much better back then.

thats my take on it anyhow :)
I think that's pretty much spot on. You feel much more emotional bonding with the music you listened to in years 15 - 25. Some artists that you bond with during that period become pretty much part of the fabric of your life in a pretty profound way. Whilst I like Arctic Monkeys, it's nowhere near what I feel for Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Yes, Led Zeppelin.
