who was that country whos anthem sounds just like ours heard it a few years back
Liechtenstein, same tune.

Not all anthems have words, Spain's doesn't.

France ironically have by far the best anthem, if La Marseillaise doesn't get the adrenalin pumping nothing will.

Allons enfants de la Patrie, Come, children of the Fatherland,
Le jour de gloire est arrivé ! The day of glory has arrived!

The very words, I hear, with which Nicolas Anelka engaged his coach, prior to his half-time subbing!

our anthem is the only one that's about a person rather than a country. if people are anti-royal, they aren't going to sing it. this doesn't mean they're not patriotic.

good point but i can't imagine that 80% of the England players are so anti royal. If thats the case then its a sad reflection on England as country. I think its down to not having pride to play for your country.

was talking about this last night, i think on average you will find northerners refraining but southerners belting it out. i was suprised to see carragher singing last night because he never used to. gerrard will be expected to as captain.

i used to get annoyed by them not singing but now i think it's to do with god save the queen. if we changed the anthem to jerusalem or land of hope and glory and the players still didn't sing then i'd slag them off.

all british national anthems make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. cannot be beaten, no one can get near them with the exception of france maybe.

digressing slightly, before reading this thread i always thought italys national anthem was the one that went with the words of; 'we got di canio, you got fuck-all-e-oh'.

you learn something new every day.

Will never understand why players don't sing the national anthems. It think it would be interesting to see if there is a relationship between the success on the pitch and how players feel about their national anthem. I think it shows a togetherness from the very start. Surely its not a coincidence that the players from Uruguay were busting out of their chest with pride when their anthem is played and their brillaint performances on the pitch. Compare this to the barely moving lips of a few England players and their wimpering displays. Thought Mexico gave a rousing rendition also and they haven't done to bad either. Just a thought.
maybe the majority of them might think that singing a song that pays tribute to a priveledged, unelected family in this day and age is as backward as them dickheads blowing them fuckin plastic trumpits or whatever you want to call em

as a minimum we should at least be earning royalties off it.
