We listened to Lanky getting a tonking on the way back, and stopped at the Queens pub in Dove Holes to see the end of the match. As we got in, Jackie took flight. The rest is history.

Pete Craven winning his second world championship at Wembley in '62, lost my voice for a week. A Clive Lloyd six off the front foot at Old Trafford, Torville and Deane winning their gold medal, Arnold Palmer using his driver out of the rough in the Open, the awful sight of Greg Norman unravelling . Aggers and Johnson's test commentary, live radio, still makes me smile. Walter Payton in full flight, Bo Jackson 150 yard throw to second base for the Royals. Bit left-field but Billy Connoly's take on the Olympics, the British team being lapped on the Parade Lap....

I nearly caught one of the sixes he hit that day and was clearly seen on all the news bulletins that evening.

I’d also booked sick from work that day and unsurprisingly wasn’t kept on when my probation period ended a few weeks later.
