Best Opposition Player You've Seen Live v City.

Another vote here for Zola in that match at Maine Road when Chelsea won 3-0 (2002ish I think)

I've often had this type of debate with fans of many other clubs and I'll always mention Zola in that match - it's great to see so many other Blues saying the same thing as my memory isn't what it used to be!!

What I do remember of that match was I was sitting in the Gene Kelly, it was pissing it down and Chelsea took Zola off with about 15 minutes to go.
As others have said, we all gave him a standing ovation, such was his masterclass.......then we all left!!

I fucked off to The Gardeners for a few scoops (Or it may have been The Lord Lyon) and we were all discussing his performance

Best team was Dortmund under Klopp.

Peps Bayern was another good one.

Best player I have seen live against City was either Luis Suarez, Mario Gotze, Robben or Neymar.

Falcao for Monaco as well.

I don't remember Messi having a standout game against us albeit away from home when Joe Hart was immense was pretty close. Its hard with Messi because his level was set so high

I remember Paul Merson getting applauded off the pitch by city fans at Maine road playing for villa when he was subbed off

This was several years before he turned into a complete bellend pundit

Cavani, when he played for Napoli against us at the Etihad, seemed like a perfect centre forward.

Watched a very young Michael Owen tear us a new one at Maine Road (hat-trick IIRC?!) and thought, “That lad might be a good ‘un!”

Bernardo had a pretty fucking great game against us for Monaco at the Etihad, too! I remember thinking, when we went for him for big money, how one big time performance can change the trajectory of one’s career.

The thread title is the 'best player' I've seen... Messi is the greatest player in history.

You could argue there are other players who've had a better one off performance against us. But Messi is the best player.

...and he had great games against City too, even at PSG he scored a beauty in his first season.

BTW for me there is no such thing as ONLY ONE best player, certainly one of the best ever no doubt

Frank Lampard. One year he came to the Etihad with Chelsea, I think it was during the Barry De Jong era.

I have never watched a footballer make the game look so effortless and dominate like that, not in the flesh

Watching Messi was the most bizarre, in that he has absolutely no involvement in the majority of the game, and then just comes alive when he fancies it

Others worth noting were Ronaldo and Rooney; probably compounded by it being in a Derby, but every single time they touched the ball I was fearing the worst

Fabregas, Iniesta and Xavi as well and a final nod to Marco Reus who was unreal at the Etihad when we played Dortmund in 2012

Never saw Ronaldo have a great game against us. Rooney was a monster on his day though, strong and quick as fuck and had all the ability aswell.

Gordon Banks in the 2-1 defeat against Stoke at Maine road that probably cost us the league in Rodney Marsh's first season.
I was sitting at the front of Platt Lane right behind the goal. he was immense that day. It included a double save from Lee and Davies that at the time I knew was brilliant - in his autobiography he said they were the best saves he ever made. https://www.theguardian.com/football/gallery/2019/feb/12/gordon-banks-a-life-in-pictures. (I remember it differently to the way its described in this article - but there is no video to check - so I will trust my memory for this one)

It was more the feeling that I had when he got the ball, as opposed to what he did with it. Agreed, he rarely had a good game against us!

Crazy how they got away with having Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez and Berbatov in their squad. Cunts!
