Best Opposition Player You've Seen Live v City.

Ian Bishop for Bournemouth when they came back from 3-0 down against us in the last home game of the season when we only needed a win to go up.

Berbatov in that League Cup game

Messi a few times, so easy to mistake him walking around for laziness but there's a reason he's allowed to do it

Henry at Maine Road in 2002

Hazard basically every time we played the fucker

Bale in 2011/12 I think it was

Lahm in 2013/14 was a scandalously good player. That whole team was: Robben, Ribery, Kroos etc.

Cyrillic Regis was majestic
My favourite player from an opposing team and still an all time hero. Taken way too soon.

Those harrowing afternoons against the genuinely great Liverpool sides! Painful though as you say we have more objectivity. Dalglish was so intelligent, strong, and though not especially quick, his speed of thought was as outstanding his touch and delivery. Outstanding in xn excellent team that was ahead of its time.

So that Boxing Day win was very special especially after those annual drubbings. A lot of last ditch blocks and tackles and a little luck got us there.
That era watching Liverpool beat us season after season. They has so many great players but going completely opposite to topic....for some reason I about fucking hated Sammy Lee with a passion. Enhanced even further when he teamed up with BFS who hate equally!!!

Never saw any of those live but I'd have liked to, particularly Cruyff.

He was like Colin Bell, strong, graceful, and immensely fit.

Some players just rise above the rest and maje the game look so easy. Greaves, Dalglish, Cruyff, Bell and Best were leagues above the players around them.

Proper footballers from a time of proper football.

Its the best player I have seen live thread.
The times I saw Messi he was not at his usual high standard.
There is no doubting that Messi was the best player in the world at that time and he's still going strong.

Great so who have you picked by the way?

Others people think Messi based on his performance. I think the quality of opposition impacts on judging performance also and for a striker, if we take that one game, winning a pen, scoring a hatrick and providing an assist suggests a pretty decent performance.

Keane in a 3 2 loss when Niall Quinn had scored twice for us.
Robben when he was playing for Bayern against us.
Jon Macken was my first choice. We went and bought him based on his performance against us.

Didn't see the Messi match you are talking about live, only on tv.
You're talking about the match that our keeper was sent off in. Messi was superb that night alright.

Zbigniew Boniek in 77/8 Uefa cup game v Widzew Lodz at Maine Road was incredible. From memory we were 2-0 up and he started to play. The game finished 2-2 and we got beat over there. A chap came on the pitch from the Kippax and had him by the scruff of the neck at one point in the second half (don't know why?). We ended up with the fences up for all european home games after that.
I was in Platt Lane with my brother that match. It was a long time ago but I remember Boniek being too good for us. I also remember the nutcase coming on the pitch but I can’t remember much else.

All good picks.

I went to the Preston match when Jon Macken scored the wonder goal but cannot remember him playing well besides the goal (likely a failing in my memory).

Yes Robben was a great great player. He had a ridiculously high bar as a player, and was incredible at Bayern but I always thought he was at his best prior to injury in the earliest days of his spell at Chelsea. He was just electrifying (again off topic to the OPs question).

Yes Keane in the 2-3. If memory serves me right he stole in at the back post to tap in the winner. Certainly a game of two halves. Think United had got beat midweek by Gala in the Champs league and there was a bit of a thing about Turkish delights being handed out prematch etc. They looked flat first half but completely different side second half.

Incidentally there was a few I can recall. The ones which stand out the most are Thierry Henry (1-5), game where a long ball came over his head, he controlled beautifully in one movement and next touch rifled it into the bottom corner. Looks great on YouTube but even better Live. Ille Dumitrescu (5-2), Chris Waddle in a defeat to Sheff Weds when he terrorised Mike Quigley, Gazza against us when we beat them
2-1 but he scored a wonderful solo goal (helped by a stray arm).
