Best players never to win the world cup

Cruyff and George best

Those are the two I’d pick. I’d add to that Charlie Cooke. Any Scot of my generation who follows football will understand (I’m not Scottish).
Cooke was the best pure ball player that I’ve seen in the flesh, bar none (never saw Maradona live, nor Messi). Unfortunately, Cooke would rather have thumbscrews applied than take a shot on goal, so he’s not remembered. Just a question of temperament, I think. He’d leave an entire defence literally on their arses and then look up in the penalty area to find somebody to give it to for the goal.
Merlin’s not quite as bad, but I sometimes think he won’t be properly remembered for what he is, for exactly the same reason. But at least he’s got a sackfull of medals. Including a World Cup one.

Matt Le Tissier!
Criminally overlooked by successive England managers, until Hoddle (despite being a great player himself, failed to recognise his talents) made the barmy decision not to pick him in 1998, which effectively ended his playing career.

Nowhere near the best at anything though.
Must be near the bottom of all the players mentioned in this thread.
Along with Charlie Cooke.
